If you've ever watched golf or tried to buy a gift for a golfer, you've probably heard someone mention their handicap. Here's what it actually means, how it works, and why it matters.
What Is a Golf Handicap?
A golf handicap is a number that represents a player's ability relative to the difficulty of a course. It allows golfers of very different skill levels to compete against each other fairly.
The lower the handicap, the better the golfer:
| Handicap | Ability level |
|---|---|
| 0 (scratch) | Plays to the par of the course |
| 1–9 | Low handicapper, strong club-level player |
| 10–18 | Mid handicapper, plays regularly and competitively |
| 19–28 | High handicapper, competent but inconsistent |
| 29–36 | Developing player, still building consistency |
| 54 | Maximum handicap (World Handicap System) |
How Does a Handicap Work in Practice?
Say a course has a par of 72. A player with a handicap of 18 is effectively allowed to take 90 shots (72 + 18) before they go over their "net par."
In competition, your net score is what matters:
Net score = Gross score (actual shots taken) - Handicap
A player shooting 94 with a 22 handicap has a net score of 72 — level par. A scratch player who also shoots 72 has the same net score. They competed fairly, despite the significant difference in ability.
The World Handicap System
Since 2020, the UK has used the World Handicap System (WHS), which replaced the previous CONGU system. The key features:
- Maximum handicap: 54 (previously 28 for men, 36 for women)
- Calculated from your best 8 of your last 20 rounds
- Adjusts dynamically — it goes up and down as you submit scorecards
- Works globally — recognised at courses in over 100 countries
The handicap is now called a Handicap Index and is expressed to one decimal place (e.g., 14.2).
How to Get a Golf Handicap in the UK
You need to be a member of an affiliated golf club. The process:
- Join a club affiliated with England Golf, Scottish Golf, or Wales Golf
- Play and submit scorecards — you need three 18-hole rounds recorded through your club
- Your Handicap Index is calculated automatically once sufficient scores are in
- It updates after every submitted round
You manage your handicap through the MyEG app (England Golf), Scottish Golf app, or your club's administration.
What About Pay-and-Play Courses?
You cannot get an official WHS handicap from pay-and-play or public courses. The club must be affiliated with the national golf union.
Handicap vs Stableford Points
Many club competitions use the Stableford format rather than stroke play (counting every shot). In Stableford:
- 2 points for net par
- 3 points for net birdie (one under par)
- 1 point for net bogey (one over par)
- 0 points for two or more over net par
Your handicap determines which holes you receive "strokes" on — extra shots that count toward your net score on the hardest holes. Each hole is ranked by difficulty (stroke index 1–18 on your scorecard).
What Is a Course Handicap?
Your Handicap Index is your portable number. Your Course Handicap adjusts it for the specific course and tee you're playing from — harder courses give you more strokes, easier ones give you fewer.
The course handicap is calculated for you automatically on modern scorecards and apps.
Does Handicap Matter for Gift Buying?
If you're buying a golf gift for someone, their handicap is a useful guide:
| Handicap | What they'd enjoy |
|---|---|
| No handicap | Lessons, beginner experience, driving range |
| 20–36 | Round at a good local course, lesson to improve |
| 10–20 | Experience day at a quality course, playing lesson |
| Under 10 | Top 100 course round, golf break, premium experience |
Use our Gift Finder if you're not sure where to start, or browse golf lesson vouchers for a gift that helps any level improve.
