Golf in Fife
Fife is the home of golf.
St Andrews, Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie Links, and Elie — the county has more great courses per mile than anywhere on earth. Here's how to gift a Fife golf experience.
About Golf in Fife
Fife is where golf began. St Andrews — the Old Course, the town, the Royal & Ancient clubhouse overlooking the first tee — is the physical and spiritual centre of the game. But Fife is more than one course. Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie Links, and the historic Golf House Club at Elie make this the most concentrated collection of great golf in the world.
Fife's Top 100 UK Golf Courses
St Andrews (Old Course) — Rank #1
The most famous golf course in the world. The double greens shared by outward and inward holes. The Swilcan Bridge on the 18th. The Road Hole (17th) — the hardest par-4 in Open Championship golf. The Valley of Sin guarding the last green. No other course carries this weight of history and meaning.
Six courses sit on the Links — the Old, New, Jubilee, Eden, Strathtyrum, and Balgove — making St Andrews accessible for golfers of every level, not just those who can play the Old Course.
Kingsbarns — Rank #9
Ocean views from every hole. Created in 2000 on land that last saw golf in the 1800s, Kingsbarns manages to feel both brand new and deeply traditional. The turf quality, the clifftop holes, and the design make it the most visually spectacular links course in the UK. Playing Kingsbarns alongside the Old Course is a perfect two-day Fife itinerary.
Dumbarnie Links — Rank #28
Opened 2020 on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, Dumbarnie is the most recent addition to Fife's elite. Views across to Edinburgh and the Forth bridges, classic links design, and a layout that demands every shot in the bag. It has quickly established itself as one of the great new courses in Britain.
The Golf House Club, Elie — Rank #37
Historic, eccentric, and thoroughly enjoyable. Elie has a periscope on the first tee for checking the 18th hole is clear. The course winds through the village, along the beach, and back — nine of the holes are unlike anything you'll play elsewhere. A completely different experience from Kingsbarns or Dumbarnie, and no less rewarding.
Golf in St Andrews Town
Beyond the famous courses, St Andrews itself has:
- The Links Trust — managing all six public courses
- The British Golf Museum — the definitive story of the game's history
- The R&A Clubhouse — overlooking the first tee of the Old Course
- Caddie availability on the Old Course for those who want the full experience
The town is compact and walkable, with excellent hotels, restaurants, and the atmosphere of a place that takes golf seriously without taking itself too seriously.
