About The Golf House Club, Elie

The Golf House Club at Elie is one of Scotland's oldest and most characterful links, where a periscope salvaged from a submarine is used to check the blind first tee shot is clear.

Founded in 1875 in the East Neuk village of Elie on the Firth of Forth, The Golf House Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in Scotland and one of the most endearingly eccentric. The course runs along the shoreline, combining tight natural terrain with blind shots and a layout that demands local knowledge. The periscope on the first tee, salvaged from a Royal Navy submarine, is the club's most famous feature and a symbol of a place that takes golf seriously but never too solemnly. Visitor access is available and the club's welcoming reputation makes it an excellent choice for golfers exploring Fife.

Scotland has many distinguished golf clubs, but few that capture the game's essential spirit quite as well as The Golf House Club at Elie. Founded in 1875 in one of the East Neuk's most attractive villages on the Firth of Forth, the club has accumulated nearly 150 years of history without losing its character or its accessibility. The course runs along the shoreline in the manner of the earliest Scottish links, following the natural contours of the ground with blind shots and tight terrain that reward familiarity. The famous periscope on the first tee, salvaged from a Royal Navy submarine and installed to allow golfers to check the hidden fairway is clear, tells you everything you need to know about the club's self-assurance and sense of humour.

The layout rewards patience and course management over power. Blind tee shots require trust and local knowledge; the ground near the sea is uneven and demands creative shot-making; and the wind off the Firth can transform the difficulty of the round without warning. It is a course that benefits from repeat visits, with each round revealing new angles and new solutions to familiar problems. Golfers who have played Elie multiple times consistently describe it as one of the most enjoyable courses in Fife, a county that sets a very high bar.

The East Neuk of Fife provides a superb setting for a golf trip, with Elie sitting alongside St Andrews and Kingsbarns as part of a natural itinerary for golfers exploring the region. The fishing villages of Anstruther, Crail and Pittenweem are within easy reach and worth exploring after a round. Elie itself is a charming coastal village, and the combination of excellent accessible golf and beautiful surroundings makes this one of Scotland's most rewarding golf destinations.

Probably the most beautiful course I've ever played, absolutely stunning course in fantastic condition. The icing on the cake is how friendly everybody is, as a single player I phoned first thing in the morning and they managed to squeeze me in before lunch time, was met by Stuart who not only took the time to talk me through all I would need to know but also met me in the 18th to welcome me in. I met several members out on the course all of whom couldn't have been nicer. Lovely course, lovely people, what more could you want. A "must play" if you're in the area.
