About Wallasey
Wallasey Golf Club on the Wirral Peninsula is one of the most historically significant courses in British golf, the place where Dr Frank Stableford devised the scoring format now played by millions of golfers worldwide.
Founded in 1891 at the seaward tip of the Wirral Peninsula, Wallasey is a traditional seaside links with a claim to golfing history matched by very few courses anywhere on the planet. Dr Frank Stableford, a club member, invented his points-based scoring system here in 1931, and the format spread so rapidly that it now accounts for a vast proportion of all recreational rounds played globally. The course itself is a genuine and testing links, exposed to the winds off Liverpool Bay, with natural dune terrain, firm fairways and greens that demand accuracy and invention in equal measure.

Wallasey
Wallasey commands a superb stretch of duneland at the northern tip of the Wirral, where the Irish Sea and the Mersey estuary converge and the wind is a constant and decisive presence. The links plays across natural terrain with the authentic character of a course shaped by its location rather than by architectural intervention, and the demands it places on a visitor change materially with every shift in wind direction. Accuracy off the tee and a reliable short game are the prerequisites for a good score; attempting to power the course into submission rarely works on a layout this exposed.
The historical resonance of Wallasey is impossible to separate from the experience of playing here. Standing on the course knowing that the Stableford format, which has now been played in hundreds of millions of rounds across every golfing nation on earth, was conceived on this very ground gives the visit a weight and significance that few courses can offer. The club wears this heritage with quiet confidence rather than making a spectacle of it, and the primary focus remains the golf itself. For golfers exploring the Merseyside cluster, Wallasey pairs naturally with Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) and West Lancashire to form one of England's most rewarding multi-course itineraries.
Those who travel to the Wirral for the golf will find in Wallasey a course that is simultaneously approachable and demanding. The setting, with views across Liverpool Bay to the Welsh hills on a clear day, is one of the most striking in northern English golf, and the combination of historical significance and genuine links quality makes this one of the most satisfying rounds on the entire list. Jeff OConnor5 months agoJamie in the pro shop is top notch. Members I met were extremely friendly. The course is very playable, spectacular condition and has breathtaking views. Old Tom Morris design and where the Stableford scoring was invented.
shaundoddtravelsnaps Instagram2 years agoThis is possibly the best course I have ever played. As a first time visitor I found the clubhouse to be very welcoming and friendly. The course itself is immaculate and a great test of golf.... bring your A game you will need it. The first cut of rough isn't too bad but if you go too wide off the tee you get punished and probably safest to take a provisional. The history of this club is also amazing... enjoy the course.
James walker Walker2 months agoWallasey Golf Club is a fantastic traditional links course and an absolute pleasure to play. The layout through the dunes is brilliant, with real character on every hole and stunning coastal views that make the round even more special. The course is challenging but fair, especially when the wind picks up proper links golf at its best. The condition of the course was excellent, with very well-kept fairways and smooth, true greens. On top of that, the club has a really welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Staff and members are approachable and make visitors feel comfortable from the moment you arrive.
