About Royal Liverpool (Hoylake)

Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake is among the oldest and most revered links courses in England, a flat but fiendishly testing stretch of Wirral Peninsula turf that has hosted 13 Open Championships.

Founded in 1869 on land that had previously served as a racecourse, Royal Liverpool quickly established itself as a venue of genuine championship quality. The course is deceptively flat, with subtle ridges and hollows rather than dramatic dunes, but its defining feature is a system of internal out-of-bounds boundaries known as the cop, a low turf wall separating practice ground from the course that penalises errant drives with merciless consistency. The links sits close to the Irish Sea near the town of Hoylake on the Wirral Peninsula, in Merseyside.

England's north-west coastline is one of the world's great stretches of links golf, and Royal Liverpool sits at the heart of it. The Wirral Peninsula course may lack the towering dunes of some of its neighbours, but it compensates with an intricate routing and a subtlety that reveals itself slowly over multiple rounds. The links runs across ground that was once a horse-racing track, and the old racecourse's flat profile remains part of the course's identity, creating wide corridors where the wind, the cop, and the position of the pin become the primary hazards.

The club's Open Championship history stretches back to 1897, and the 2023 edition brought Hoylake back into the spotlight after a gap of seventeen years. Brian Harman's commanding wire-to-wire victory reminded a new generation of viewers why the course is held in such high regard. The ghost of Tiger Woods's 2006 victory still haunts the layout, his decision to hit three-wood and long iron all week in the heat of July reducing the course to a precise tactical exercise and demonstrating the kind of strategic thinking that sets elite players apart.

For visitors, a round at Hoylake is a rare chance to walk fairways that have witnessed over a century of Open history. The closing stretch along the far boundary of the course, with the town of Hoylake visible beyond the hedgerows, builds to a finish that is as demanding as any in links golf.

Just a wonderful experience starting with the staff who welcomed us. Access all areas. Range. The golf course was immaculate and a wonderful test of golf lived up to expectations of a top Open Championship golf course. Some difficult greens to hit , hard and fast for approach shots. Good views along the beach. Good bar and nice food

It's a worthy open venue, beautiful greens and lay out

Attended The Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club (as a spectator!!). It's a beautiful course and made for large attendances. The facilities provided were great, including the access via trains to and from Hoylake. The great big on course spaces allowed for multiple stands that gave great views across greens, fairways, and teeboxes. The local volunteers were courteous and helpful. The course itself has enormous greens with countless options for pins. The pot bunkers are a massive test for mere mortal golfers. The multiple tee boxes per hole give huge variations on hole lengths. The fairways are flatter than the greens too! It is a great Open venue and a true test for a golfer of any handicap and ability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 'the cop' at Royal Liverpool?
The cop is a low turf boundary that separates the main course from the practice ground at Hoylake. Several holes run parallel to the cop, meaning a pulled or pushed drive can cross this internal out-of-bounds line and cost a player stroke and distance. It is one of the most distinctive and strategically influential features of any links in the British Isles, demanding careful course management even from accomplished golfers.
When did Tiger Woods win at Royal Liverpool?
Tiger Woods won the 2006 Open Championship at Hoylake, famously choosing to hit long iron off the tee on most holes to avoid the cop and control his ball flight in the firm conditions. He finished at 18 under par, two shots ahead of Chris DiMarco, and his tactical approach that week is widely studied as a masterclass in course management. Hoylake most recently hosted The Open in 2023, won by Brian Harman.
How old is Royal Liverpool Golf Club?
Royal Liverpool was founded in 1869, making it one of the oldest golf clubs in England. The club was instrumental in developing the rules of amateur golf and hosted the first Amateur Championship in 1885. The Royal prefix was granted by King Edward VII in 1902.
Can visitors play Royal Liverpool (Hoylake)?
Royal Liverpool welcomes visitors on most weekdays, though tee times must be booked in advance through the club's website or secretary's office. A valid handicap certificate is required. The club advises checking current visitor availability directly, as championship preparation and member events can limit access at certain times of year.
