About Southerndown
Southerndown offers some of the most dramatic golf in Wales, a clifftop and downland course above Ogmore-by-Sea with sweeping views across the Bristol Channel and a layout of real character.
Founded in 1905 and set on the clifftops and rolling downland above Ogmore-by-Sea in the Vale of Glamorgan, Southerndown Golf Club occupies one of the most visually spectacular settings of any course in Wales. The layout combines the links-like turf of a windswept coastal site with the undulating terrain of the downland, producing a course that does not fit neatly into any single category but excels on its own terms. Panoramic views across the Bristol Channel to the Somerset and Devon coasts frame almost every hole, and the course has a history of hosting significant events including the Dunlop Masters.

Southerndown
Southerndown belongs to a category of British golf course that is rarer than either links or heathland: the clifftop downland layout, where the turf has the tight, windswept character of the coast but the terrain rolls and pitches with the contours of inland high ground. The result is a course of considerable variety and challenge, one that demands constant adjustment of both strategy and technique as the round progresses. No two holes present quite the same problem, and the wind, which can arrive from several directions across the open clifftop, adds a further layer of complexity that changes the course from visit to visit.
The panoramic views across the Bristol Channel are a constant presence throughout the round. On clear days, the Somerset coast is visible to the east and the Devon cliffs can be seen in the far distance to the southwest, while the Vale of Glamorgan farmland rolls inland behind the course. This quality of view, combined with the drama of playing on clifftops above the sea, gives Southerndown a sense of occasion that remains long after the scorecard is filed away. The course's hosting of the Dunlop Masters reflects the quality that architects and professionals have long recognised here.
The proximity of Royal Porthcawl and Pyle & Kenfig makes Southerndown part of one of the most rewarding golf clusters in Wales. The three courses are within a short drive of each other and offer entirely different experiences: Porthcawl's exposed links, Kenfig's enclosed dune corridors, and Southerndown's clifftop downland. Together they represent a case for the Vale of Glamorgan coast as one of the most underrated golf destinations in the British Isles.

Josh Hilla year agoStunning course in brilliant condition for January! Greens super slick, bunkers still nice and fluffy not packed down etc. Lovely clubhouse and their winter deal is fantastic value, well worth a visit even from afar
Craiglewgolf PGA pro2 years agoI played a qualifying round for the Senior British Open here. The greens were slower than expected, but I truly enjoyed playing this course. Be prepared for lies that may not be perfect as sheep and horses wander through. We had three hearty breakfasts here, too.
J Peters3 years agoI played here as part of a society recently, the course has stunning views and is a relatively easy walk compared to some of the other courses in the area. The club house is smart too, and the patio provides wonderful views of the 1st tee & 18th green.
