About Skibo Castle

Andrew Carnegie's Highland estate near Dornoch is home to one of the most private and beautiful golf courses in Scotland, reserved exclusively for Carnegie Club members and their guests.

The Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle was established in 1898 on the Highland estate originally built for Andrew Carnegie, the industrialist and philanthropist. The golf course, a hybrid of Highland links and parkland design with views over the Dornoch Firth, is available exclusively to Carnegie Club members and their invited guests. The estate encompasses the castle itself, a country house hotel of exceptional quality, alongside the golf course, spa, fishing and shooting. Located near Dornoch in Sutherland, close to [Royal Dornoch](/courses/royal-dornoch), Skibo sits in one of Scotland's most celebrated golf landscapes, and the combination of the two courses makes this part of the Highlands a genuine destination for golfers of the highest ambition.

Skibo Castle, The Carnegie Club, Clashmore, Dornoch IV25 3RQ, UK

Andrew Carnegie was one of the most powerful industrialists of the nineteenth century, and when he chose the Scottish Highlands as the location for his private estate, he did so with the same thoroughness that characterised everything else he undertook. The Skibo estate, which he acquired and developed from 1898, was conceived as a place of complete retreat, and the golf course was a natural part of that vision. The layout that occupies the ground along the Dornoch Firth combines the qualities of Highland linksland with the sheltered character of a parkland design, and the views across the Firth towards the hills of Easter Ross give the course a backdrop that few private estates anywhere could equal.

The exclusivity of the Carnegie Club is absolute, and this places Skibo in a small category of courses that are ranked for their quality while remaining inaccessible to the overwhelming majority of golfers. The ranking reflects the assessment of those who have played the course: that the layout, the setting and the overall experience are of the highest order. For those able to access it as guests of a member, the combination of the castle, the estate and the golf represents a version of Scottish country house hospitality that has few peers. The proximity of Royal Dornoch, one of the finest links courses anywhere in the world, means that a stay at Skibo can be extended into a broader itinerary of exceptional Scotland golf.

The Dornoch area has a concentrated quality of golf that is remarkable even by Scottish standards. Royal Dornoch alone would justify the long drive north from Inverness or the flight to Inverness Airport, but the addition of Skibo, and the general quality of the Highland landscape through which any visit must pass, makes the journey feel proportionate to what awaits. Madonna and Guy Ritchie married at Skibo in 2000, reflecting the calibre of the club's membership, though the Carnegie Club remains better known for its discretion than its celebrity connections. Carnegie's original vision of the Highlands as a place of serious pleasure has been maintained here with a fidelity that is evident the moment the estate gates open.

Listen....I've golfed everywhere all over the world. This was the most unique, special golf experience of my life. My foursome was basically the only foursome on the course. Everything from the facilities (locker room and bar wow) to the caddies to the course were top notch. Better than Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart.
