About Royal Dornoch

Royal Dornoch rewards the effort of getting there with some of the most naturally formed links golf anywhere on the planet.

Set on elevated duneland above the Dornoch Firth in the far north of Scotland, Royal Dornoch has been shaping golfers and golf design for well over a century. Donald Ross, who went on to design Pinehurst No.2 and hundreds of courses across North America, learned his golf here under Old Tom Morris's influence before emigrating to the United States, and echoes of Dornoch's raised, contoured greens can be found in courses across the American continent. The Championship Course is visitor-friendly by the standards of elite Scottish links, though booking ahead is essential.

The journey to Scotland's far north is itself part of what makes Royal Dornoch memorable. Most of the country's great links cluster around the central belt or the East Lothian coast, within easy reach of Edinburgh. Dornoch sits nearly 300 miles north of the border, past Inverness and up into Highland countryside that feels genuinely remote. Those who make the effort are rewarded with a course that has been described by Tom Watson as one of his five favourites in the world, and by many others as the finest natural links they have ever played. The elevated terrain above the Dornoch Firth produces tumbling fairways, ridgeline greens and views across the water that are unlike anything found further south.

The Championship Course plays to just over 6,700 yards from the back tees, but length is emphatically not the point. The greens at Dornoch are the defining feature: raised, plateau surfaces angled to shed approach shots in unexpected directions, demanding precise trajectory control and a willingness to use the ground rather than the air. Old Tom Morris visited and offered initial advice, and John Sutherland, the club's secretary for many decades in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, shaped much of the course's enduring character. The 14th, Foxy, is frequently cited as one of the finest natural par 4s in links golf, its green sitting on a ridge above the Firth with no bunkers needed to defend it.

Royal Dornoch has hosted the British Amateur Championship and the Senior Open Championship, though it has never staged The Open, primarily because the town's infrastructure and transport links make the logistics of a major championship difficult. For many golfers, this is part of its appeal: the course exists almost in its own world, unsullied by the corporate apparatus of a regular Open venue, and the town of Dornoch, with its 13th-century cathedral and unhurried pace, makes for a very different backdrop to the commercial bustle of an Open host town. A visit here, combined with other Highland courses, represents one of the great Scottish golf journeys.

We booked it for dog friendly , the hotel is old as it’s an old building. The restaurant looks over the golf course and ocean which is outstanding. The food is excellent. Dornoch is beautiful town. The only thing we would have preferred is a ground floor with a dog and flooring that can be cleaned. The carpet is very stained and is on floor 2 . It would be more hygienic for hard flooring not carpet

The golf experience and the town were absolutely amazing. Very small and quaint, just perfect if you’re looking to play golf in northern Scotland! We stayed at Dornoch Station, very nice!!

This was the trip of my lifetime shared with my son, his best friend and dad. This gem of a course defies description. Added to this was the experience of having a caddy for the first time. Each of them was most helpful, engaging, and enhanced the golfing experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book a tee time at Royal Dornoch?
Tee times on the Championship Course can be booked directly through the Royal Dornoch website at royaldornoch.com. The club is more accessible than many top-ranked courses and does not require a member's introduction. Advance booking is strongly recommended during the summer months, as the course attracts a significant number of international visitors making the journey specifically to play here.
How far is Royal Dornoch from Inverness?
Royal Dornoch is approximately 40 miles north of Inverness, reached via the A9 and A949. The drive takes around 45 to 50 minutes in normal conditions. Inverness Airport has direct connections from London and several other UK cities, making it a practical base for a Highland golf trip. The town of Dornoch itself has several hotels and guest houses for those who want to stay close to the course.
What is the connection between Royal Dornoch and Donald Ross?
Donald Ross was born in Dornoch and learned his golf on the links there. He worked as an apprentice under Old Tom Morris and absorbed the principles of natural links design before emigrating to the United States in 1899. He went on to become the most prolific golf course architect in American history, designing or redesigning over 400 courses including Pinehurst No.2, Oakland Hills and Seminole. The raised, plateau greens that Ross championed across his American work are widely seen as a direct inheritance from Dornoch.
Does Royal Dornoch have a second course?
Yes. The club operates the Struie Course alongside the Championship Course. The Struie is a full 18-hole layout and offers a good test of links golf in its own right, though it is less severe than the Championship Course. It is a popular option for those who want to play multiple rounds during a visit to Dornoch without repeating the main course.
When was Royal Dornoch granted its Royal prefix?
King Edward VII granted Royal Dornoch its Royal prefix in 1906. The club had been formally established in 1877, though golf had been played in Dornoch for considerably longer; records of the game being played there date back to the early 17th century.
