About North Berwick

North Berwick West Links is a quirky, ancient and utterly captivating links, home to the original Redan hole and one of the most characterful courses in world golf.

Founded in 1832 and shaped over two centuries without the intervention of a single lead architect, the West Links at North Berwick is a living record of golf course evolution. Its most famous hole, the 15th Redan, a par 3 played to a plateau green angled sharply away from the tee, has been copied more than almost any other hole in golf, appearing in hundreds of courses across the world. The town of North Berwick sits at the eastern end of the course, and the views across the Firth of Forth to the Bass Rock and Fidra Island give the layout an openness and grandeur that belies its compact yardage.

Scotland's East Lothian Golf Coast runs east from Musselburgh along the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, passing through a series of towns and villages each with its own historic links. North Berwick sits near the outer end of this stretch, and the West Links has a different personality to its more formal neighbours. Where Muirfield is precise and architecturally coherent, North Berwick is meandering and idiosyncratic, the product of generations of golfers who modified the layout to suit the land and the game as it was understood at the time. Stone walls cross the fairways, the routing doubles back on itself in unexpected ways, and some greens sit in positions that no contemporary architect would propose. All of this makes for a round that is genuinely unlike any other.

The Redan at the 15th is the course's most significant contribution to golf course architecture globally. C.B. Macdonald, the American architect who visited North Berwick in the late 19th century and was captivated by the hole, later reproduced it at the National Golf Links of America, and from there the Redan concept spread across the world. The original remains the best: the angle of the green, the bank on the left that delivers a properly played shot towards the flag, and the exposure to the Firth of Forth wind combine to create a hole of perfect, enduring logic. What makes it a template is not its difficulty but its elegance; every element serves the design and nothing is superfluous.

The Bass Rock, a volcanic basalt column rising from the Firth of Forth just offshore, is visible from much of the course and is one of the most dramatic natural features visible from any golf course in Britain. Fidra Island, the smaller outcrop to the west, is said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. The combination of historical depth, architectural significance and natural grandeur makes North Berwick a course that rewards study as well as play. A visit to the East Lothian Golf Coast that does not include the West Links is missing one of the essential experiences in British golf.

What an experience. Links golf at its purest. Stunning views as you play some unique holes of golf. Warmest of welcomes from the team at the club and an amazing caddie (Billie) who tirelessly ran from one side of the fairway to the other to give shot guidance - as well as providing local information and background on the course itself.

North Berwick is pure links magic—quirky holes, stone walls, and ocean views that never get old. The Redan and 13th green are architectural icons. Fun, challenging, and full of character. One of the most enjoyable walks in golf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can visitors play North Berwick West Links?
Yes, North Berwick is one of the more accessible top-ranked courses in Scotland. Visitor tee times are available and can be booked through the club's website at northberwickgolfclub.com. While advance booking is recommended during the summer months, the course does not operate with the same level of restricted access as some of its East Lothian neighbours. A valid handicap certificate is required.
What is the Redan hole?
The 15th hole at North Berwick, known as the Redan, is a par 3 of around 190 yards. The green is set on a raised plateau and angled away from the tee from left to right, meaning a straight approach will run off the right side of the green. The correct play is to aim left of the pin and allow the slope to feed the ball towards the flag. The Redan concept has been used as a template for par 3 design across the world; C.B. Macdonald's National Golf Links of America and several other famous courses contain explicit copies of the original.
What other famous holes does North Berwick have?
The 13th, Pit, is a short par 4 played over a stone wall to a green partly enclosed by a natural hollow. The 14th, Perfection, is a longer par 4 with a wall crossing the fairway and a tight approach to a guarded green. These features, which would never be permitted in a modern course design, are part of North Berwick's extraordinary historical character. The walls, the asymmetric routing and the occasional blind shot give the course a personality that no modern design can fully replicate.
How does North Berwick compare to Muirfield and other East Lothian courses?
North Berwick is very different in character to [Muirfield](/courses/muirfield), which is a formal, precise championship layout. North Berwick is organic, quirky and occasionally eccentric, reflecting centuries of evolution rather than a single architectural vision. It is less severe as a test but more surprising and more historically interesting. Many golfers find it the more enjoyable of the two to play, even if Muirfield represents the higher technical standard.
What is the best way to visit North Berwick from Edinburgh?
North Berwick is approximately 25 miles east of Edinburgh and is served by a direct rail line from Edinburgh Waverley. The journey takes around 35 minutes and the station is a short walk from the course. This makes North Berwick one of the easiest top-ranked courses in Scotland to reach without a car. The town itself has several good restaurants and a small but appealing high street worth exploring after your round.
