About Muirfield
Muirfield is the home of the world's oldest golf club and one of the most intelligently designed championship courses ever built.
The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers was founded in 1744, predating even the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, and their present home at Muirfield has hosted The Open Championship more times than any other course on the East Lothian coast. Harry Colt's 1925 redesign introduced the celebrated two-loop routing: nine holes running clockwise around the perimeter, nine holes anti-clockwise through the interior, ensuring that wind direction never dominates more than a few consecutive holes. The result is a course that demands every shot in the bag and punishes imprecision without relying on luck.

Muirfield
Scotland's East Lothian coastline is one of the most densely packed stretches of quality links golf anywhere in the world. North Berwick, Gullane, Dunbar and several other fine courses sit within a few miles of one another, but Muirfield stands apart through the combination of its historical weight, its design purity and the seriousness with which it approaches the business of championship golf. The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers drew up the original 13 Rules of Golf in 1744, a document that underpins the modern game, and their course at Muirfield has reflected that commitment to precision and principle ever since.
The layout is famously unforgiving without being unfair. There are no par 5s on the back nine; instead, a sequence of long, testing par 4s demands accurate driving and precise approach play into small, well-bunkered greens. The rough at Muirfield, when grown for a major championship, is among the most severe in the game, and the bunkers are deep, steep-faced and strategically placed to catch even slightly errant shots. What distinguishes the course from a purely penal layout is that the correct line is always visible; it is simply very difficult to execute. Tom Watson, reflecting on Muirfield after his 1980 Open win, called it the finest course he had ever played.
The club's membership policy attracted significant controversy prior to 2017, when members voted against admitting women. A subsequent ballot reversed this decision, and Muirfield was reinstated to The Open rota. The 2013 Open, won by Phil Mickelson in a final-round charge of exceptional quality, had demonstrated again that the course produces compelling, meritocratic competition when conditions allow. With R&A confidence restored, Muirfield returned to the rota and the debate around the club has since given way to a renewed focus on what the course itself offers: a supreme, self-contained test with no external excuses available to anyone who fails it.

Stephen Caldwell3 months agoWhat to say about such a beautiful and famous links/club. It definitely lives up to its reputation. Absolutely perfect in every way, all the people and facilities. The course is splendid and the playing surfaces are total dream to play on. It felt a fair test of golf too, sometimes the high end courses are very hard work to play for standard golfers, but I felt this was very fair. Brilliant 🤩
Chris Goodshipa month agoWow! What a great day. We went as a visiting 4-ball in January. The hospitality from the moment we arrived was exceptional and made the day very special. The course was incredible and despite some rough weather we enjoyed the round. Lunch after was great! The staff from Dani in the clubhouse to Jose in the shop made us most welcome. We will definitely be looking to return in future years!
Bigblue Scot3 months agoWonderful course in great condition on a November morning. Lunch was outstanding. Service and hospitality very friendly and professional. One of our fourball had a hole in one on the par 3 7th hole. All in all a perfect day.
