About Machrihanish Dunes
Machrihanish Dunes is one of the most remote and naturally dramatic links courses in Scotland, designed by David McLay Kidd using a minimal-intervention philosophy on ancient common land at the tip of the Kintyre Peninsula.
Designed by David McLay Kidd and opened in 2009, Machrihanish Dunes was built on ancient common land alongside the original [Machrihanish](/courses/machrihanish) course at the southern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll. Kidd's design philosophy was genuinely minimal: no trees were moved, no burns were redirected and the course follows the natural duneland contours of one of Scotland's most spectacular stretches of Atlantic coastline. The result is a links of raw beauty and genuine difficulty, open to all visiting golfers without the need for a member introduction.

Machrihanish Dunes
Scotland has no shortage of remote golf destinations, but Machrihanish occupies a category of its own. The tip of the Kintyre Peninsula, cut off from the central belt by the long finger of land that reaches south into the Irish Sea, requires a genuine commitment from visiting golfers: a three-hour drive from Glasgow down the A83, or a small plane from Glasgow Airport to Campbeltown. That commitment is rewarded in full. The Atlantic coastline here is among the most dramatic in Scotland, with the dunes, the open sea and the island of Islay visible on the western horizon combining to create a setting that is impossible to replicate anywhere on the east coast or in the central lowlands.
David McLay Kidd's design philosophy at Machrihanish Dunes was one of deliberate restraint. Where many modern courses reshape the ground to the architect's vision, Kidd worked on ancient common land with a commitment to leaving the landscape intact. No trees were moved. No burns were redirected. The course follows the natural duneland as if it had always been there, and the result is a links that feels genuinely organic rather than designed. The holes along the Atlantic shore are among the most exposed in Scotland, with the wind off the ocean the primary challenge and the natural turf running fast and unpredictable. Several holes border the sea directly, and in a westerly gale the golf can be as demanding as anything the game offers.
Machrihanish Dunes sits alongside the original Machrihanish course, which was founded in 1876 and is itself one of the great traditional links in Scotland. Playing both courses in a single visit is one of the best two-day golf experiences available anywhere in the British Isles, and the remoteness of the location gives the trip the feeling of a genuine pilgrimage. The village of Machrihanish and the nearby town of Campbeltown have the practical amenities needed for an overnight stay, and for golfers willing to make the journey, this corner of Argyll delivers an experience that is hard to equal.

Zachary Gibbsa year agoThis was the third Kidd-designed course I've played, and goodness was it beautiful. Truly a links feel since the course had to adhere to the shape of the land. Archie was a great caddy and even a better companion out on the course. I can't wait to revisit.
