About Machrihanish
Machrihanish is one of the most remote and celebrated links courses in Scotland, where the opening tee shot plays across a sweep of Atlantic beach on the Kintyre Peninsula.
Founded in 1876 and shaped into its current form by Old Tom Morris, Machrihanish sits at the southern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll, a journey that demands effort but rewards it generously. The first hole, which requires golfers to carry the beach as much of the Atlantic tide as they dare, is among the most iconic opening shots in golf, and the remaining seventeen holes maintain that sense of wild, unspoiled links terrain that defines the course's character.

Machrihanish
Scotland has no shortage of remote links experiences, but few demand as much commitment to reach as Machrihanish, and fewer still deliver as complete a reward. The course sits on a natural links ground of rare quality, shaped by Old Tom Morris into a routing that uses every feature of the dune terrain. The prevailing Atlantic wind and the proximity of the sea mean that conditions change quickly, and a calm morning round can feel entirely different from an afternoon in a westerly gale.
The village of Campbeltown nearby provides accommodation and a modest selection of restaurants and pubs, including access to the Springbank distillery, one of Scotland's most respected single malt producers. Those who make the trip often plan a few nights in the area, pairing Machrihanish with Machrihanish Dunes, which opened in 2009 on adjacent ground and offers a contrasting but complementary experience. Together, the two courses make Kintyre one of the most rewarding golf destinations in the country.
The ferry link from Ballycastle in Northern Ireland opens up an interesting cross-channel itinerary. Golfers travelling from Northern Ireland can combine Royal County Down or Royal Portrush with a crossing to Campbeltown, then head north through Argyll to continue into the central Scottish links belt. It is a routing that demands planning but produces a golf journey unlike almost anything else available in the British Isles.

Derek Christie6 months agoExcellent course with probably the best and most daunting opening hole. Lots of blind tee shots with magnificent rolling and undulating fairways. Have it on your bucket list to play.
atta lone8 months agoSeveral individuals recommended this golf course, and I initially hesitated due to the extended travel time. However, I am pleased to report that the journey proved worthwhile. The opening hole presents an impressive visual impact, and the course maintains impeccable conditions across all areas, including tee boxes, fairways, and greens. The only area for potential improvement is the directional signage to the subsequent tee. The shop staff provided excellent assistance and displayed a wide selection of merchandise at competitive prices. Furthermore, the clubhouse offers an exceptional experience, featuring outstanding views of the course.
Billy Turner8 months agoAmazing golf course. Played the 9 hole on Sunday, also a wee gem, but the championship course is very special. 1st hole tee shot is spectacular, am sure plenty balls have ended up on the sand.....or worse!! Can't wait to come back here again!!
