About Littlestone
Stretched across the shingle and links turf of Romney Marsh, Littlestone is one of England's most underrated links courses and a genuine test of coastal golf.
Founded in 1888 on the Kent coast near New Romney, Littlestone Golf Club is a true links course of considerable distinction. The course occupies flat, open ground on the edge of the Romney Marsh, directly exposed to the winds blowing in from the English Channel, and it presents a set of challenges entirely characteristic of links golf at its most demanding: firm, fast turf, natural undulations in the fairways and greens, and weather that can change the character of the round from hole to hole. The club has hosted the English Amateur Championship and the Girls' British Open Amateur Championship, confirming its standing as a venue of national significance. Visitor access is available with advance booking, and the course sits within easy reach of both Folkestone and the East Sussex coast.

Littlestone
England's links coastline is most often associated with the north-west, with Lancashire and the Fylde Coast where Royal Birkdale and Formby draw the majority of travelling golfers. The south-east corner of England offers a quieter and less celebrated alternative, and Littlestone sits at the heart of it. The course on the Romney Marsh coast has the essential qualities of a genuine links: firm turf worn short by the salt wind, fairways that pitch and roll in ways that punish the aerial game and reward the running shot, and greens that are fast and true. The Channel is a constant presence, audible and visible from much of the course, and the winds it generates make every round a slightly different negotiation.
The course's layout on flat Romney Marsh terrain might suggest a lack of variety, but this is a misjudgement that the round itself quickly corrects. The natural humps and hollows of the linksland produce a surprising range of lies and stances, and the bunkering is positioned to catch the shots that the wind pushes offline from the intended line. Littlestone rewards the same skills that all serious links courses reward: the ability to keep the ball low when required, to read the ground game and to think in terms of position rather than simply distance.
The amateur championship history of the club is a reliable indicator of quality. Courses are not chosen to host national events by accident, and Littlestone's selection for the English Amateur and the Girls' British Open Amateur reflects the assessment of those who know the game well. For golfers building a links itinerary in the south of England, the combination of Littlestone with Royal Cinque Ports and Rye creates a short but genuinely rewarding circuit along one of the country's less-explored stretches of golfing coastline.

Stuart D5 months agoWe came to play here on a trip to Deal. Very impressed. The course provides a great links experience although it felt like a 14 club wind gusting up to 55mph. In spite of that we had a great time working out how to get a score. The course itself was in great condition and that was enhanced by the welcome we received in the pro shop and in the clubhouse. A great welcome in the shop, an appreciated welcome gift and very helpfully offered to move our time to avoid some larger groups. The food in the clubhouse was well prepared and very tasty and we were made to feel very welcome. Thank you Littlestone, we had a great day!
Nick Clarkea month agoThis is a great links course. Played in Jan 2026 when many well draining courses were shut. Unbelievably the fairways were running and the greens were very fast. In the strong wind we had it was a real challenge. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely worth a visit.
Matthew Johnson6 months agoUnbelievable true links gc. #16 inspired CB Macdonald on his design of #5 at National Golf Links, due to its natural brilliance as a golf hole.
