About Royal Birkdale

Royal Birkdale is the finest championship links in England and the country's most reliable Open venue, a course set among towering sand dunes that consistently produces fair, exacting and memorable golf.

Founded in 1889 and playing its championship layout since 1931, Royal Birkdale sits behind Southport in the sand dunes of the Lancashire coast. Frederick Hawtree and JH Taylor's design runs through the valleys between the dunes rather than over their crests, a distinctive routing that provides true lies and fair conditions even when the wind is severe. The art deco clubhouse, built in 1935, is among the most recognisable in British golf, and the course's ten Open Championships have produced some of the most celebrated moments in the game's history.

The Lancashire coast between Southport and Blackpool contains one of the most impressive concentrations of links golf in England, and Royal Birkdale is the undisputed flagship. The sand dunes behind the seafront provide a natural amphitheatre that has proved ideal for spectator management at major championships, and the course's proximity to the North West's transport infrastructure makes it one of the most accessible Open venues in Britain. Ten Opens in little over six decades is a record that reflects not just the quality of the course but the confidence the R&A has placed in the club and its membership to deliver a championship at the highest level.

Jordan Spieth's 2017 win here was a reminder of what makes Birkdale compelling at the highest level: on the 13th hole during the final round, his ball came to rest in a waste area well off the fairway, requiring a ruling that took several minutes to resolve. What followed was one of the most audacious recovery shots in Open history. The course presents situations like this regularly, not through artificial contrivance but through the interplay of dunes, wind and fast-running fairways that characterises genuine links golf. The scoring window is narrow; small misjudgements compound quickly, and the back nine, where the dunes are at their most severe, is where championships are won and lost.

The art deco clubhouse, resembling an ocean liner stranded in the dunes, gives Royal Birkdale a visual identity unlike any other major venue. It was built in 1935 and has been carefully maintained, and the views from its first-floor windows across the 18th green and the surrounding duneland are some of the best in English golf. Arnold Palmer planted a commemorative plaque on the 16th hole after his famous recovery during the 1961 Open, a piece of golfing history embedded in the landscape of the course. Birkdale accumulates moments like this; it is a course where great golf is both demanded and remembered.

What an amazing experience. A warm welcome - truly felt like you were a guest for the day. Course was in spectacular condition - and great but fair challenge. Our caddies (Derek and Keith) really were the icing on the cake with their gentle humor, information about the course and the area and importantly help with shot selection and green reads. Expensive for sure, but a must for golfers wanting the best.

It was one of the best golfing experiences. Facilities, course clubhouse, and staff were amazing. If I have the opportunity to play there in the future, I would definitely take the opportunity too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can visitors play Royal Birkdale?
Royal Birkdale is a private club that permits visitor access on certain days. Advance booking is required and must be arranged through the club directly via royalbirkdale.com. A valid handicap certificate is required, and visitors are expected to comply with the club's dress code. The club receives a high volume of visitor enquiries, so early contact and flexibility on dates is recommended.
How many times has Royal Birkdale hosted The Open Championship?
Royal Birkdale has hosted The Open Championship 10 times. Champions include Peter Thomson (1954 and 1965), Arnold Palmer (1961), Lee Trevino (1971), Johnny Miller (1976), Tom Watson (1983), Ian Baker-Finch (1991), Mark O'Meara (1998), Padraig Harrington (2008) and Jordan Spieth (2017). The course is widely regarded as one of the R&A's preferred venues for its consistently fair examination.
What is the significance of the 18th hole at Royal Birkdale?
The 18th hole at Royal Birkdale was the scene of one of golf's most celebrated acts of sportsmanship. During the 1969 Ryder Cup, on the final hole of the final match, Jack Nicklaus conceded a short putt to Tony Jacklin, ensuring the match and the Ryder Cup itself ended in a tie. Nicklaus said afterwards that he did not want Jacklin to miss the putt and lose the Ryder Cup on his home course. The act has become synonymous with the spirit of the game.
Why is Royal Birkdale's routing considered especially fair?
Most links courses are routed over and across dune ridges, which can create uneven lies from drives that catch a slope at an awkward angle. Royal Birkdale's designers ran the holes through the valleys between the dunes, meaning tee shots that find the fairway generally find a level lie. The challenge is in placing the ball on the fairway in the first place, and then executing an approach from ground level into greens that are often elevated and well-defended. The fairness of the challenge is a major reason why the R&A repeatedly chooses Birkdale for its flagship event.
What accommodation is available near Royal Birkdale?
Southport town centre is within a few miles of the course and has a range of hotels and guest houses. The Fairways Hotel, close to the course, is a popular choice for golf visitors. Liverpool is approximately 20 miles south and offers a wider range of city-centre accommodation with good transport links, making it a practical base for a multi-course trip.
