About Hindhead
Hindhead is one of the most visually spectacular heathland courses in southern England, a JF Abercromby design that exploits the dramatic terrain of the Surrey Hills to create a round of genuine elevation, character and beauty.
Founded in 1904 and designed by JF Abercromby, Hindhead occupies an elevated position on the Surrey Hills plateau within the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty above the town of Hindhead. The course sits close to the famous Devil's Punchbowl, a dramatic natural amphitheatre that gives the surrounding landscape its distinctive, almost otherworldly character, and the views from the higher points of the course are among the finest available on any golf course in the south-east of England. Private and restrained, Hindhead is a club that rewards discovery by golfers who seek out the best of British heathland design beyond the most celebrated names.

Hindhead
The elevation at Hindhead sets it apart from the majority of Surrey heathland courses, which tend to sit on relatively flat or gently undulating ground. Abercromby's design exploits the contours of the plateau to create tee shots of genuine drama, approaches that play to greens positioned at angles that require careful thought, and views that open up unexpectedly as the round progresses. The natural landscape does much of the work, and Abercromby's skill was in resisting the temptation to impose too much artificial order on a site that already had everything a great heathland course needs.
Heather crowds the fairways in the authentic Surrey manner, Scots pines create natural corridors and cast long shadows in the afternoon light, and the sandy soil beneath ensures that the course drains quickly and plays firm for the majority of the year. These are the conditions in which heathland golf is at its best, demanding a controlled ball flight and the ability to work the ball when the wind picks up over the exposed higher ground. Hindhead sits comfortably within Surrey's remarkable collection of heathland courses and pairs particularly well with Liphook for golfers planning a journey to this corner of the south-east.
The private nature of the club, combined with its relatively modest public profile, means Hindhead is not a course that attracts casual visitors. Those who do arrange access tend to be serious about heathland golf and to appreciate the quality of Abercromby's design with the full attention it deserves. The experience is one of quiet distinction: a superbly conditioned course in a genuinely beautiful natural setting, played in an atmosphere of unhurried privacy. matt sturgess2 years agoI played this golf course today in a match against hankley common 28/5/23 and I have to say it is an unbelievable golf course! It’s the nicest and best course I have ever played. Very picturesque. The greens are like lighting , very true and roll beautifully. The fairways are gorgeous. The club house is also good.. nice food and good beer on tap. I can’t recommend this golf course enough , you will not be disappointed.
David Sumsiona year agoFirst and foremost, Hindhead is a must play golf course. It's different in a brilliant way. The front nine is rather unique and quite frankly exceptional to experience and play. I've played nothing quite like it in the UK, in fact anywhere. It left be breathless in more ways than one at times :). The back nine isn't quite as dramatic, but once again, it's an excellent nine holes of golf. From the pro shop to the bar staff, the whole off course experience is a friendly and welcoming one. The Aliss Bar is a lovely touch and brought back some wonderful memories. The photos won't do the course justice, so if you're in the area, please go and experience it all for yourself. You will not be disappointed - an exceptional course with the staff to match.
Jon Gulliver3 months agoI've been a member since 1997, this is an outstanding welcoming golf club. The course is beautiful, full of wildlife and in fabulous condition. It's not long but very challenging.
