About Liphook

Laid out by Arthur Croome in 1922 on rolling Hampshire heathland, Liphook has remained almost untouched for over a century and is all the better for it.

Founded in 1922 and designed by Arthur Croome, Liphook Golf Club occupies a stretch of heathland near the Hampshire-Surrey border that has changed remarkably little since the course first opened. Heather, gorse and pine frame the fairways on a layout that relies on natural terrain and intelligent bunkering rather than artificial contrivance. Located close to Hindhead and the Surrey Hills, Liphook sits within easy reach of several of England's finest heathland courses, yet it holds its own with genuine confidence. The club has a notably welcoming attitude to visitors compared to many of its private neighbours, and advance booking is recommended to secure a tee time.

Liphook occupies a corner of the Hampshire heathland that time seems to have treated gently. Arthur Croome's original design has survived the intervening century with its integrity largely intact, and the result is a course that feels genuinely of its era without feeling dated. The routing makes use of the rolling terrain to produce a variety of hole shapes and angles, and the bunkering, placed to catch the errant shot rather than punish the merely cautious, has an organic quality that distinguishes it from courses that have been repeatedly updated and modernised. Playing Liphook is, in part, an exercise in understanding what early twentieth-century heathland design looked like at its most considered.

The course's position near the Hampshire-Surrey border places it in good company. Within a reasonable drive, golfers can access some of the most celebrated heathland layouts in England, and Liphook fits naturally into a multi-day itinerary built around this part of the south. What it offers that some of its more famous neighbours do not is straightforward access; the club's welcoming attitude to visitors means that a round here rarely requires the same level of advance planning or the navigating of complex visitor restriction policies. That accessibility, combined with the quality of the course itself, makes Liphook a particularly appealing destination.

There is a quietness to a round at Liphook that reflects both the setting and the club's character. The course does not announce itself with dramatic elevation changes or signature holes that demand a photograph; instead, it builds a cumulative impression of thoughtful design and natural beauty that stays with a golfer long after the round is finished. For those who appreciate heathland golf at its most authentic, this corner of Hampshire is worth the journey.

Superb course, played it Jan 19th in 4 degree weather. Played of the whites and it’s a serious test of golf. Some very challenging long par fours but some very gettable par 5s. Great par 3s except perhaps 17 which does let the rest of them down slightly. Course was in great condition given rain and frost, can only imagine in peak times it would be utterly amazing. Would love to come back

I haven’t played all of them obviously, but I would say that this is one of the best courses I’ve experienced in England. Stunning greens and fairways like carpets, the course is well maintained by a team who know what good looks like and are passionate about golf. A real treat.

Simply wonderful. A course presented so well, fantastic greens, run of areas and fairways like carpet. A must for any golfer who wants to play a great course

Who designed Liphook Golf Club?
The course was designed by Arthur Croome, a golf architect and writer active in the early twentieth century. Croome's routing at Liphook is notable for its restraint and sensitivity to the natural landscape, and the course has been largely preserved in its original form.
Where is Liphook Golf Club located?
