About Hillside

Hillside is the great hidden gem of Lancashire links golf, a championship course of genuine quality that stands in the shadow of its famous neighbour at Southport.

Founded in 1911 and substantially redesigned by Fred Hawtree in 1967, Hillside Golf Club occupies the same sandy duneland terrain as its immediate neighbour, [Royal Birkdale](/courses/royal-birkdale), sharing the same corridors of marram-covered dunes behind Southport. Despite a back nine that is widely regarded as among the finest nine holes of links golf in England, Hillside has never quite achieved the international profile of Birkdale, a circumstance that its devotees regard as one of its greatest virtues. The course has hosted the European Tour's British Masters and numerous national amateur events. Visitor access is available on selected days, with advance booking required.

The Lancashire coast between Southport and Blackpool contains one of the greatest concentrations of links golf in the world, and Hillside is one of its finest expressions. Fred Hawtree's 1967 redesign transformed what was already a capable course into something significantly more ambitious, routing the back nine through the highest and most dramatic section of the dune system and creating a sequence of holes that demand both nerve and creativity. The course plays differently in every wind direction, as all the best links do, and the sandy soil ensures that it remains in excellent condition throughout the year.

The proximity to Royal Birkdale is both Hillside's greatest asset and its greatest commercial challenge. Golfers who make the journey to Southport for a links experience tend to gravitate towards Birkdale's Open Championship cachet, and Hillside benefits from overflow rather than being the primary destination. This is a circumstance that has, paradoxically, preserved something of the club's character: it is unhurried, focused on golf rather than reputation, and consistently well-maintained without the pressure of hosting major championships. Those who do seek it out tend to leave with an evangelical conviction that it is undervalued.

Hillside sits naturally alongside Royal Birkdale and Southport and Ainsdale in any serious northern England golf itinerary. For golfers with time for more than one round in Southport, the contrast between Birkdale's championship grandeur and Hillside's quieter authority is one of the most satisfying double-headers available anywhere on the English coast.

5 minute walk from train stop. Entire facility amazing. Using practice area for The 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale which is next door. Course conditions and greens spectacular. especially the back 9 layout is amazing links course. Sausage roll and beer around 10th is a must too. Staff very friendly and caddy Tom one of the best.

Came here to play a round of golf at this world class golf course. I was not disappointed, greens were in top condition and course was looking good. Topped off with a warm welcome at the club house from a young chap called Adam. He went out of his way to make sure myself and my clients were looked after. I highly recommend playing here also visiting the club house for good food & excellent service.
