About Broadstone

Broadstone is one of Harry Colt's most accomplished heathland designs and Dorset's finest golf course, a course of elevated character set among pine and purple heather with long views across the Purbeck Hills.

Founded in 1898 on the Dorset plateau above Poole, Broadstone began life as a Tom Dunn design before Harry Colt reshaped it into the course it is today. Colt's involvement elevated Broadstone into the front rank of English heathland golf, producing a routing of natural intelligence that works with the terrain rather than against it. Heather, gorse and Scots pine frame the fairways throughout, the sandy soil drains quickly to give firm, fast conditions for most of the year, and views towards Poole Harbour and the Purbeck Hills add a visual dimension that makes the setting as memorable as the golf.

The heathland at Broadstone has a quality that rewards close attention. Arriving at the course, the air carries the scent of pine and the landscape opens up into a setting of purple heather, golden gorse and silver birch that makes it immediately clear this is something out of the ordinary. Colt's routing flows naturally with the undulations of the Dorset plateau, using the changes in elevation to frame tee shots, create visual drama and ensure that no two consecutive holes feel alike.

The bunkering is characteristically Colt in its intelligence: positioned to penalise a specific line off the tee rather than to punish indiscriminately, it rewards golfers who have studied the course and thought carefully about their angle of attack into each green. The greens themselves are well-contoured and firm, demanding precise approach play from a club that must be carefully chosen to account for the Dorset wind and the firm running ground. Broadstone sits comfortably alongside Parkstone and Ferndown as a cornerstone of what is an exceptional regional heathland circuit.

Broadstone is less celebrated in the wider golfing public than courses of comparable quality in Surrey or Berkshire, and this relative obscurity works very much in the visiting golfer's favour. The experience here is one of unhurried quality, with well-prepared turf, a calm private club atmosphere and the genuine satisfaction of playing a course that has been designed and maintained to the very highest standard. A wonderful golf course in the top 100 which normally I would thoroughly recommend but until they sort out their fairways and greens which are infested with leather jackets. It should have been preferred lies but was only the case on the 16th fairways. Staff were all excellent with superb bar staff and bar manager. The exception being the General manager who despite numerous attempts see him so we could discuss the state of the course which they still have the cheek to charge £105, went with out bothering to see us. Normally I would say visit but until they sort out the infestation I would avoid like the plague and save your money. I still will attempt to contact the General Manager to get his comments and suggest they make it clear the problems they have when you book. The bar manager did an excellent job in looking after us and. Make up for the disappointment. He is an excellent ambassador for the club and should be someone the General manager should aspire to be. Good club house with great food and beers and wines. Good halfway house and potential to be a top 100 again.

One of the top 100 golf courses in GB. Harry Colt design, very beautiful throughout, but very unforgiving. If you in doubt, then think twice before you hit……

I had the absolute pleasure of DJing a 40th birthday party at Broadstone Golf Club and from the moment I arrived, I could tell it was going to be something special. The Venue is beautiful and the staff were incredibly helpful and professional, and the overall vibe of the venue created the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable night. Thanks and look forward to coming back soon.
