Golf Courses on the Algarve: Portugal's Best Golf Destination

Why is the Algarve the top golf destination for UK golfers?

The Algarve has been the go-to golf destination for British players for decades, and for good reason. It delivers reliable sunshine (over 300 days a year), world-class courses designed by the game's biggest names, and a flight time of under three hours from most UK airports. Add in excellent food, affordable accommodation, and a culture that genuinely welcomes visiting golfers, and it is easy to see why the region dominates European golf tourism.

The southern coast of Portugal packs over 40 courses into a strip roughly 150 kilometres long. Whether you want a championship test, a scenic resort round, or a quiet parkland layout, the Algarve has it.

The Algarve's finest courses in detail

Monte Rei (North Course)

Monte Rei is consistently ranked as the best course in Portugal and one of the finest in Europe. Jack Nicklaus designed it, and the investment in conditioning is extraordinary. Every fairway, green, and bunker looks immaculate. The layout flows through gentle hills and ancient olive groves in the eastern Algarve, away from the busier resort zones.

Green fees are premium at €200 to €280, and the experience matches the price. The clubhouse, practice facilities, and service levels are all world-class. This is a once-in-a-lifetime round for most visitors.

Best for: Golfers who want the ultimate Algarve experience and are happy to pay for it.

Quinta do Lago (South Course)

Quinta do Lago is one of the Algarve's most prestigious addresses, and the South Course is its flagship layout. Redesigned and reopened in recent years, it weaves through umbrella pines and lakes, with the Ria Formosa nature reserve providing a stunning backdrop.

Green fees range from €150 to €200. The resort surrounding the course offers luxury accommodation, restaurants, and a sports campus that covers far more than just golf.

Best for: Resort golfers who want a complete luxury holiday experience.

San Lorenzo

San Lorenzo sits within the Quinta do Lago estate but has its own distinct character. Joseph Lee designed a course that uses the Ria Formosa lagoon system brilliantly, with several holes running along the water's edge. The par-3 6th, played across the lagoon to a peninsula green, is one of the most photographed holes in European golf.

Green fees are €140 to €190. The course is not always easy to book as a non-resort guest, so plan ahead.

Best for: Golfers who appreciate natural beauty and a course that works with its landscape.

Vale do Lobo (Royal Course)

Vale do Lobo Royal is famous for one hole above all others: the par-3 16th, which requires a carry across dramatic red sandstone cliffs with the Atlantic Ocean below. It is one of the most iconic holes in European golf, and it lives up to its reputation.

The rest of the course is excellent too, routed through pine trees and sandy terrain. Green fees sit at €130 to €180. The resort at Vale do Lobo is one of the most established on the Algarve, with extensive accommodation and dining options.

Best for: Golfers who want that bucket-list cliff-top photograph and a premium resort experience.

Vilamoura Old Course

The Old Course at Vilamoura is a classic. Designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1969, it runs through mature umbrella pine forests that create cathedral-like corridors of dappled sunlight. The layout is strategic rather than brutal, rewarding good course management over raw power.

Green fees are €100 to €150, and Vilamoura itself is the most popular tourist hub on the Algarve, with a famous marina, dozens of restaurants, and lively nightlife.

Best for: Golfers who enjoy traditional parkland golf and want to be close to restaurants and nightlife.

Amendoeira (Faldo Course)

Nick Faldo's design at Amendoeira, inland near Silves, is one of the most challenging courses on the Algarve. The layout features bold bunkering, firm and fast greens, and strategic angles that demand thought off every tee. It is a thinking golfer's course.

At €70 to €110, it represents excellent value compared to the coastal resort courses. The resort also has an Oceanico O'Connor course and good on-site accommodation.

Best for: Mid to low handicappers who enjoy a stern test and do not mind being inland.

Palmares, Lagos

Palmares sits on the western Algarve near the charming town of Lagos. Robert Trent Jones Jr designed a course that moves through three distinct landscapes: dunes by the ocean, a valley with lakes and streams, and elevated terrain with panoramic views across Lagos Bay.

Green fees are €80 to €130. Lagos itself is one of the most attractive towns on the Algarve, with historic streets, excellent seafood restaurants, and beautiful beaches.

Best for: Golfers who want scenic variety and a base in one of the Algarve's most characterful towns.

Penina Championship

Penina holds a special place in Algarve golf history. Sir Henry Cotton designed it in the 1960s, and it was the first championship course in the region. The flat layout, surrounded by rice paddies and water features, feels completely different to the pine-lined courses further east.

Green fees are a modest €60 to €100, making it the best value on this list. The course has been modernised while retaining its historical character.

Best for: Golf historians, budget-conscious players, and anyone who wants a quality round without the resort premium.

When is the best time to play golf on the Algarve?

The Algarve is a genuine year-round destination, but certain windows are better than others.

Peak season (October to November and March to May): The weather is warm without being oppressive, the courses are in peak condition, and the light is beautiful. This is when serious golfers visit, and green fees reflect the demand.

Summer (June to September): Temperatures regularly hit 35°C and above. Morning rounds starting before 8am are fine, but afternoon golf is punishing. Many courses offer discounted twilight rates.

Winter (December to February): Mild by UK standards (15 to 18°C most days), and green fees drop significantly. The odd rainy day is possible, but you will still play more than you would at home.

How to plan your Algarve golf trip

Getting there

Faro Airport serves the entire Algarve and is well connected to UK airports. Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, and British Airways all fly direct. Flight time is around two and a half hours. Car hire is straightforward and inexpensive, and you will need one if you want to play multiple courses across the region.

Where to stay

Vilamoura is the most popular base: central, well connected, and within reach of five or six courses.

Quinta do Lago / Vale do Lobo suits golfers who want a self-contained luxury resort experience.

Lagos on the western Algarve is ideal for golfers who want a more authentic Portuguese town experience alongside their golf.

Silves / Carvoeiro in the central Algarve puts you near Amendoeira and several other inland courses.

Booking tips

  • Book tee times in advance, especially between October and May.
  • Consider a golf package through a provider like Swyng, Your Golf Travel, or the resort itself. Package deals often include transfers and preferential tee times.
  • Many courses offer multi-round discounts if you book two or more rounds at affiliated venues.

Our pick

For the overall best golf experience on the Algarve, Vilamoura Old Course takes our top recommendation. It combines a beautifully designed and maintained course, a fair price, and the best location on the Algarve for restaurants, nightlife, and convenience. If your budget stretches further, add Monte Rei as your once-in-a-trip splurge.
