Golf Bag Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Bag in 2026

The right golf bag is the one that works for how you actually play. A tour bag that costs £400 is useless if you walk every round; a lightweight carry bag is impractical if you always use a buggy. Getting the bag type right matters as much as the brand or the price.

Which Type of Golf Bag Do You Need?

Stand bag (most popular for UK golfers who walk): A stand bag has retractable legs that prop the bag upright when set down, two carrying straps for comfortable walking, and a reasonable number of pockets for a full round's worth of gear. The average golfer who walks nine or eighteen holes needs a stand bag. Weight matters here: look for bags between 2.0 and 2.5 kg empty. A 3+ kg stand bag will tire you out on a long course.

Cart bag: Designed to sit on a trolley (electric or push) rather than be carried. Cart bags are wider, heavier, and have more pocket space because they never need to be shouldered. Fourteen individual club dividers, a full-length clothing pocket, and separate ball and accessories pockets are standard. The extra organisation is genuinely useful if you play trolley golf regularly.

Carry bag / Sunday bag: A stripped-down, lightweight bag designed for carrying a half-set. Ideal for a quick nine holes, a practice session, or golfers who want minimum fuss. Not suitable as a primary bag for full rounds.

Tour bag: The large, imposing bags you see professionals use. Designed to be carried by a caddie, not a golfer. Too heavy and unwieldy for almost all recreational golfers.

What to Look For in a Stand Bag

Weight: Under 2.5 kg empty is the threshold for a comfortable walking round. Under 2.0 kg is excellent. Be wary of manufacturers listing "strap and frame" weights rather than complete bag weights.

Strap system: A dual strap system (two individual shoulder straps) distributes weight more evenly than a single strap. Look for padded, ergonomic straps that adjust smoothly. The Ping Hoofer and Sun Mountain Two5 are benchmarks for strap quality.

Club dividers: A 14-way full-length divider system (individual channels running the full length of the bag for each of the 14 clubs) prevents clubs tangling and protects grips from wear. Some budget stand bags have 4-way or 6-way dividers that allow clubs to knock against each other.

Pockets: You need a waterproof valuables pocket (for phone, wallet, and keys), a large clothing pocket, ball pockets accessible during the round, and ideally a separate insulated pocket for a drink or snack. Count usable pockets, not decorative ones.

Base design: The base should sit flat and stable on the legs and feel secure when strapped to a trolley. A wobbly bag that tips over at every downslope becomes exhausting.

Best Stand Bags in 2026

Ping Hoofer Lite: The lightest in Ping's stand bag range at around 1.8 kg, with excellent strap ergonomics and Ping's typically quality build. Around £225.

Sun Mountain 2.5+: Sun Mountain is the gold standard for stand bag design. The 2.5+ is 14-way divided, under 2.0 kg, and has the best pocket organisation in its price range. Around £185.

Titleist Players 4 StaDry: The waterproof option for UK winters. Fully waterproofed construction with all the expected pockets and Titleist's typically quality build. Around £220.

Callaway Fairway 14: A reliable, mid-priced stand bag with 14-way dividers and good pocket count. Around £150.

Best Cart Bags in 2026

PowaKaddy Dri Edition: Designed specifically for electric trolleys with a bottom-securing system that prevents any movement. Waterproof construction, 15 pockets, and a dedicated umbrella holder. Around £175.

Motocaddy Club Series: The most popular cart bag on UK courses, built around the Motocaddy mounting system with a large storage capacity and practical pocket layout. Around £160.

Sun Mountain C-130: Sun Mountain's approach to the cart bag: well-organised, durable, and rain-resistant without full waterproofing. Around £195.

What About Used Bags?

Golf bags hold their value poorly in comparison to clubs, which makes the used market excellent value. A two-year-old Ping Hoofer or Sun Mountain bag in good condition (check the zips, stitching around the legs, and strap attachment points) can often be found for under £80 through eBay or local golf club noticeboards.

For golfers upgrading from an old bag without a specific feature requirement, the used market is the most sensible place to look.
