About West Sussex

West Sussex Golf Club is one of England's most quietly excellent heathland courses, a Hutchison and Campbell design of great subtlety set among silver birch, Scots pine and heather at Pulborough.

Founded in 1930 and designed by Major Cecil Hutchison and Sir Guy Campbell, West Sussex Golf Club at Pulborough is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and subtly rewarding heathland courses in England. Set in the West Sussex Weald on a sandy, wooded estate of silver birch, Scots pine and heather, the course offers a round of understated excellence that has earned it a devoted following among golfers who value intelligence and atmosphere over length and spectacle. The rolling terrain creates varied stances, interesting angles and a consistent demand for thoughtful shot-making throughout.

West Sussex Golf Club is the kind of course that connoisseurs tend to discuss in lowered voices, as though revealing the location of something they would prefer to keep to themselves. Its reputation among serious golfers is strong and consistent, built not on championship hosting or high-profile membership but on the straightforward quality of the golf it provides. The Hutchison and Campbell design is a model of the classical heathland approach: work with the ground, vary the problems, build greens that reward the correctly placed approach, and trust the landscape to do the rest.

The West Sussex Weald setting is exceptional. The sandy heathland soil, established silver birch and Scots pine, and the carpets of heather that line the fairways create an environment of great natural beauty that is also ideally suited to the game. The course drains quickly, maintains firm turf through much of the year, and changes character markedly with the seasons: brilliant in spring when the birch is in fresh leaf, dramatic in autumn when the heather is in full bloom, and peaceful in winter when the woodland is bare and the sandy paths run crisp underfoot.

The subtlety that golfers most often mention when discussing West Sussex is the quality that makes it difficult to assess on a single visit. The terrain creates lies and angles that are not immediately obvious, and the greens reward approach play that accounts for their contours in ways that only become apparent through experience. This depth of design is the hallmark of the best heathland courses and the reason that West Sussex has maintained its reputation for nearly a century without needing significant alteration or modernisation. For golfers interested in the English heathland tradition at its most refined, Pulborough is an essential destination.

Fantastic golf course, staff in the clubhouse were absolutely lovely, very attentive and thoughtful, unfortunately the day out was ruined by the horrible attitude of the Head Professional Sam. So dismissive and a poor feeling from walking into and out of the shop. Won’t be back.

A warm welcome in the club shop with a smile, a good breakfast and a wonderful round of golf on a picturesque, challenging golf course. Heather, smooth greens, delightful friendly members and some really testing par 4s make this a wonderful place to golf. Love the 4th, 6th and the 10-16 stretch. Of course this is pricey, but in my view (and I have been lucky enough to play ~30 of Englands top 100), this is very much worth it.

Always love playing here when I get the opportunity. Being the friend of a member is a privilege. The course is epic and considering I played the course less than a week after storm Ciaran, it was in immaculate condition with only 2 temp greens. There was no standing water anywhere, and no mud whatsoever. If you ever get invited to play here, take the opportunity!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can visitors play West Sussex Golf Club?
West Sussex is a private members' club and advance booking is required for visitor rounds. A member introduction is preferred, though the club does accept visitor applications directly. It is advisable to contact the club well in advance to discuss availability.
Who designed West Sussex Golf Club?
The course was designed by Major Cecil Hutchison and Sir Guy Campbell and opened in 1930. Both architects were respected figures in British golf course design of the interwar period, and their work at Pulborough is considered among the finest examples of the heathland tradition.
What makes West Sussex different from other Surrey heathland courses?
West Sussex sits in the West Sussex Weald rather than the Surrey heathland belt, and its character reflects that distinction. The course is more sheltered and intimate than the open Surrey heaths, with a woodland character that gives it a sense of seclusion. The emphasis is on subtlety and variety rather than length or drama.
What is the course like in terms of length and difficulty?
West Sussex is not a long course by modern standards, but its difficulty comes from the subtlety of its design rather than its yardage. The rolling terrain creates demanding lies and angles, the greens are precisely contoured, and the course demands accurate, thoughtful golf rather than simply powerful hitting.
What events has West Sussex hosted?
The course has been used for professional practice rounds and has hosted various amateur events over its history. Its quality has attracted serious golfers and professionals seeking a testing and rewarding environment away from more commercially busy venues.
