About West Hill

West Hill is one of Surrey's most respected heathland courses, a Willie Park Jr design near Brookwood that forms part of the celebrated Surrey Trinity alongside Woking and Worplesdon.

Founded in 1907 on heathland near Brookwood in Surrey, West Hill Golf Club is among the finest and least assuming of the county's great heathland courses. Designed by Willie Park Jr, the course runs through pine, heather and silver birch in the classic Surrey mould, and its inclusion in the informal Surrey Trinity alongside Woking and Worplesdon places it in distinguished company. West Hill is a private members' club with a strong tradition of amateur competition, a strict no-buggies policy and an understated atmosphere that reflects its confidence in the quality of the golf it provides.

West Hill's reputation rests on its refusal to overcomplicate what it does. Willie Park Jr's original routing from 1907 remains the foundation of the course today, and the heather, pine and silver birch of the Surrey hills provide a setting that requires no embellishment. The holes vary in character without resorting to artifice, and the course rewards the full range of shot-making over a layout that feels natural and inevitable in the way that the best heathland courses always do. The no-buggies policy ensures that the round is experienced at a pace that allows the landscape to be properly appreciated.

The Surrey Trinity designation, though unofficial, carries genuine weight among those who know English heathland golf well. West Hill, Woking and Worplesdon each possess a distinct character, but share a common commitment to traditional values, outstanding conditions and courses that test without being punitive. Of the three, West Hill is perhaps the most understated, which is itself a quality that many golfers find particularly appealing. There is no grandstanding here, only very good golf played in an exceptional setting.

The club's strong amateur competition history has produced generations of accomplished golfers and maintained a culture in which the game is taken seriously without being taken solemnly. For visitors fortunate enough to arrange a round, West Hill offers an England heathland experience of the first order: unhurried, beautifully presented and architecturally thoughtful. It is the kind of course that improves on reflection, as the intelligence of the design reveals itself more fully with each subsequent visit.
