About Walton Heath (Old Course)

Walton Heath Old Course is among the most respected heathland layouts in Britain, a Herbert Fowler design that has challenged the game's greatest players for well over a century.

Founded in 1903 and designed by Herbert Fowler, Walton Heath Old Course occupies a stretch of Surrey heathland where heather, gorse and firm, fast turf combine to create one of England's most demanding inland tests. James Braid, the five-time Open Champion, served as club professional here for 45 years and his influence on course maintenance shaped much of what visitors experience today. The club hosted the 1981 Ryder Cup, bringing Walton Heath to a global audience, and it remains a private members' club that arranges visitor access on selected days.

Walton Heath (Old Course)

Deans Lane, Walton-on-the-Hill, Walton on the Hill, Tadworth KT20 7TP, UK

The Old Course at Walton Heath sits on a plateau south of London, elevated enough to catch every shift in the wind and exposed enough to make even moderate breezes feel significant. Fowler's routing makes excellent use of the natural ground, with fairways that run through corridors of heather and dogwood, demanding both precision and the willingness to take on lines that shorten the hole but carry genuine risk. The par fours are long and unforgiving, and the two-shot holes on the back nine in particular have a habit of undoing promising rounds.

Walton Heath also has the New Course, itself a highly regarded layout, but the Old Course carries the greater prestige and the deeper history. Together they make the club one of the outstanding two-course venues in England, attracting serious golfers from across the country who are prepared for a proper test of their game. The clubhouse retains a traditional character that suits the tone of the golf perfectly.

The F&B is outstanding! I was there for The London Foursomes; loved the little details, food and welcome were fantastic.

Stunning course with great staff. Course is setup to be challenging but rewarding and offers great views as you work your way round. Bunkers are well placed but well maintained and the heather isn’t as tight as feared. Driving range is a bit of a walk away but that’s the only issue I found, would highly recommend

Great course, amazing views. Greens were superb condition, quite muddy at the moment on the fairways in the wet. Clubhouse and staff 10 out of 10
