About The Berkshire (Red Course)
The Berkshire Red Course is one of Herbert Fowler's finest achievements, a classically balanced heathland layout that shares an estate near Ascot with its equally celebrated Blue Course companion.
Opened in 1928 and designed by Herbert Fowler, the Red Course at The Berkshire Golf Club is one of the most admired heathland layouts in southern England. Set among mature Scots pine, heather and silver birch on the Berkshire heathland near Ascot, the course offers a par 72 of classical symmetry: three par 3s and three par 5s on each nine, producing a routing of unusual variety and balance. The Berkshire is a private club with a strong reputation for the quality of both its courses and its presentation, and the Red is considered by many to be the equal of any heathland course in the country.

The Berkshire (Red Course)
The Berkshire Golf Club is one of the great private golf clubs of England, and the Red Course is a central reason why. Herbert Fowler's design philosophy emphasised working with the natural ground rather than imposing structure upon it, and at The Berkshire he had exceptional raw material to work with. The mature heathland estate, with its sandy soil, established pine and birch canopy, and carpets of heather, provided the ideal canvas for a course that feels as though it has always been there.
The symmetrical structure of the Red Course, three par 3s and three par 5s on each nine, is unusual in modern course design but entirely characteristic of the classical English heathland tradition. It produces a round of genuine variety: long, demanding par 4s alternate with short, precise par 3s, and the three par 5s offer genuine birdie opportunities that keep the scorecard interesting throughout. The greens are consistently well-paced and subtly contoured, rewarding approach play that finds the correct section rather than simply the putting surface.
The proximity of the Red and Blue Course on the same estate is one of The Berkshire's great advantages. Few golf clubs in England can offer two genuinely outstanding 18-hole layouts on the same property, and the opportunity to play both over a visit to the Ascot area is among the more appealing two-round itineraries available anywhere in English golf. The surrounding heathland, part of the same sandy belt that stretches from Sunningdale through Swinley Forest and south toward Camberley, provides a setting of consistent quality throughout.

Mark Howson2 years agoMy second visit to the Berkshire but only the first time playing the Blue course and wow! I think I might actually prefer it to the red which I know is controversial. Both are exceptional. The condition was amazing and every which way you look is just beautiful tree lined golf course. Can’t rate this course enough, it’s simply a must play.
Mark Fullera year agoI was really looking forward to playing The Berkshire which had come highly recommended. It did not disappoint at all from the moment you drive through the gates you know this is a special place. The staff are very welcoming, food is excellent, practice facilities excellent and the course was in pristine condition and a real credit to the greens staff. We played the red course which was perfect and can’t wait to return to play the blue course.
Bill Diggons5 months agoRed course is awesome. Fairways, bunkers, tees and greens all in fine shape. Up and down holes and doglegs. Pro shop and bar staff friendly. Brian is an excellent caddie.
