About Sunningdale (Old Course)
Sunningdale Old Course is widely considered the finest heathland course in England, a timeless layout of oak, pine and heather straddling the Berkshire-Surrey border.
Designed by Willie Park Jr and opened in 1900, the Old Course at Sunningdale set the template for English heathland golf that architects have sought to emulate ever since. Mature oaks and Scots pines frame almost every hole, the sandy subsoil ensures quick-draining firm turf year-round, and the routing creates a varied, rhythmic examination that rewards both power and precision. The course became famous beyond golf when Bobby Jones, in qualifying for the 1926 Open Championship, carded a 66 that contemporaries described simply as the perfect round.

Sunningdale (Old Course)
England's heathland belt, running through Surrey and Berkshire, contains some of the finest inland golf in the world, and Sunningdale Old Course sits at the very top of that tradition. The club was founded in 1900 on heathland that had long been considered wasteland, yet the sandy soil and natural vegetation proved ideal for golf. Willie Park Jr's routing makes the most of the rolling terrain, and the mature woodland that now surrounds every hole gives the course an intimacy and drama that belies its relatively modest length.
The old Sunningdale clubhouse is the shared home of both the Old and New courses, and the atmosphere within reflects a club deeply conscious of its own history. Locker rooms, dining and the famous halfway hut are all shared between members of both layouts. The heather and bracken that line the fairways can swallow wayward shots entirely, demanding accuracy off the tee that makes the course play considerably more difficult than the scorecard might suggest to a first-time visitor.
Bobby Jones's 66 in 1926 remains the defining story of the Old Course, but Sunningdale has its own rich competitive history beyond that single round. European Tour events have brought the world's best players here, and each time the course holds its own against modern equipment and modern athletes. For those fortunate enough to secure a game, a round on the Old Course is one of English golf's great privileges.

David Weaver7 months agoWe went as a group of 4 to watch the Senior Open. I had not walked the course before, so I was worried that it would not live up to the expectations of a world-leading course. How wrong I was..... Most courses have one or two great holes this course has 18 great holes, each with their own character and geography. Amazing.
simon stratman7 months agoExcellent course for spectators. Feels shorter than Wentworth. Here for senior open. Jimenez very entertaining and polite "Excuse me young man " to my son in the way at the halfway hut.
Adel Eisa6 months agoPlayed the old course, it was a truly amazing experience The course was in immaculate condition, each hole is different and it's so picturesque. Our caddies added to the enjoyment & overall experience. They also probably saved us half a dozen shots with their course knowledge . All the staff in the restaurant and pro shop were so friendly and welcoming, a day I'll never forget
