About St Enodoc (Church Course)
St Enodoc Church Course is one of England's most characterful and romantic links, a James Braid layout on the north Cornwall coast where a 13th-century church sits half-buried in the dunes.
Opened in 1890 and significantly remodelled by James Braid in 1907, the Church Course at St Enodoc occupies a narrow strip of duneland above the Camel Estuary near Rock in north Cornwall. The course takes its name from the ancient Church of St Enodoc, which stands within the course boundary and was itself buried under sand for centuries before being excavated in the 19th century. Part links, part clifftop in character, the layout offers panoramic views across the estuary and Atlantic coastline while presenting a golf course of genuine historic and architectural interest.

St Enodoc (Church Course)
Few golf courses in England carry as much layered history as St Enodoc. The medieval church from which the course takes its name was swallowed by drifting sand dunes over the centuries, its spire barely visible above the dune crests for generations before excavation returned it to use in 1863. Today it stands within the course as a quiet and remarkable landmark, framing approach shots and serving as a reminder that this landscape has been shaped by forces far older than the game of golf.
James Braid's 1907 remodelling gave the Church Course its enduring character. Braid was a master of using natural ground without forcing it, and at St Enodoc he allowed the dune ridges and estuary margins to dictate the routing in a way that feels entirely inevitable. The par 3s exploit elevated tees with views across the Atlantic, the par 5s use the rolling ground to create genuine second-shot dilemmas, and the infamous Himalayas hole remains one of the most discussed and debated in the English game. The course sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the scenery throughout is among the finest of any golf course in the country.
Cornwall is not a county typically associated with championship links golf, but St Enodoc makes a strong case for the county's place in that conversation. The combination of James Braid's architectural intelligence, the extraordinary setting above the Camel Estuary, and the cultural associations with Betjeman and the buried church give the course a depth of interest that extends well beyond the scorecard. For golfers making the journey to the far southwest, St Enodoc is the essential destination.

What Golfers Say About St Enodoc (Church Course)

Oliver Sharman4 months agoWe knew we were somewhere special from the moment we stepped through the door. They are very welcoming! Then the course, what a course it is. There are perhaps 3 average holes but the rest are great. The front 9 is incredible and the last 3 holes are spectacular. The Himalayan bunker on the 6th is a great feature. Was in great condition, even in early October. I haven’t even mentioned the views!
Steve Darch6 months agoStunning golf course , certainly one of the very best I've ever played. Stunning location, challenging holes and quality greens . Clubhouse was excellent and the staff were superb and so polite and accommodating.
Stephen Hewitt6 months agoWhat a course, so challenging, using the natural landscape, Himilayan dunes and the Church 10th is so tough, tiniest fairway. The course is made tougher in the gusty wind it played hard. However this is links in all it’s glory, my score was poor but enjoyed every hole, would love to play again and the reception, pro shop, clubhouse and members on the course were top class!
