About Silloth on Solway

Silloth on Solway is England's most northerly significant links, a beautifully remote course on the Solway Firth with sweeping views across the water to the hills of Galloway.

Founded in 1892 and developed with contributions from Willie Park Jr, Silloth on Solway Golf Club occupies a stretch of genuine links turf on the Cumbrian coast where the Solway Firth separates England from Scotland. The Victorian seaside town of Silloth grew up partly around the railway and partly around the golf club, and the two have been intertwined ever since. The course follows a traditional out-and-back routing along the shoreline, with firm, fast turf and the kind of natural undulation that only centuries of coastal wind and tide can produce.

Silloth on Solway is one of those courses that rewards golfers willing to make an effort. Its position on the Cumbrian coast, well off the well-worn paths of the Lancashire links corridor and not easily combined with other top-100 venues, has kept it pleasingly uncrowded and genuinely local in character. Those who arrive expecting a polished, marketed experience will find something better: a proper links club with a long history, a course of real quality, and a setting of quiet, expansive beauty.

The links turf at Silloth has been shaped by the same coastal forces that produced the great links courses of Scotland, and the quality of the playing surface reflects that. Firm, short-grassed fairways produce the running game that links golf demands, and the natural contours of the ground create a variety of stances and angles that parkland courses simply cannot replicate. Willie Park Jr's influence on the layout is evident in the intelligent use of the ground and the way the course builds in difficulty as the round progresses.

The Solway Firth context gives Silloth a particular atmosphere. The firth is wide, tidal and constantly shifting in light and colour, and the views to the Galloway Hills across the water reinforce the sense that this is a border landscape with its own distinct character. The Victorian town of Silloth, with its grid-planned streets and seafront green, adds a period charm that makes the whole visit feel like a step into a less hurried era of British seaside golf. For golfers who seek out the undiscovered and underrated, Silloth belongs at the top of the list.

Played here for my first links course experience. Also got breakfast- the breakfast staff were friendly and accommodating, and the food was extraordinary. Extremely helpful and accommodating staff. Stunning location, and really unique links golf experience. I’ve never made so many blind shots in my life. Course was well maintained! Wish it was cheaper, but such is life! I hope to be back.

This is the best golf experience I’ve had to date - local, friendly club feel, with world class course condition. The course is impeccable. It’s the best value for money in England by a country mile. Add to that I had the course to myself & played great 😉. This place has to be played.

Fantastic golf course. It is quite a difficult course if you haven't played there before as there are a few blind shots. But the weather was amazing and the course was in fantastic condition and everyone was friendly , polite and helpful. Definitely one to play if you're in the area👌

Frequently Asked Questions

Can visitors play Silloth on Solway?
Yes, Silloth is a welcoming club that actively encourages visitor rounds. Advance booking is recommended, particularly at weekends and during summer months. The club's visitor-friendly approach makes it easier to arrange a game here than at many courses of comparable quality.
How remote is Silloth, and is it worth the journey?
Silloth is genuinely remote, sitting on the Cumbrian coast away from major road networks. The nearest sizeable town is Carlisle, roughly 25 miles to the east. For golfers who make the journey, the combination of a top-quality links course and a spectacular, uncrowded setting makes the trip entirely worthwhile.
What are the views like from the course?
On a clear day, the views from the course across the Solway Firth to the Galloway Hills of southwest Scotland are exceptional. The wide, flat firth and the distant hills create a seascape that is unlike any other view in English golf.
What are the course conditions like at Silloth?
Silloth's links turf is naturally firm and fast. The course drains quickly and can be played through much of the year, though winter conditions on an exposed Solway coast can be severe. Late spring through to autumn offers the most reliable conditions for visiting golfers.
Can Silloth be combined with other golf courses on a trip?
Yes. Carlisle is a natural base, and the border with southwest Scotland is close enough to consider combining a Silloth round with courses on the Scottish side of the Solway. The area also sits within range of the Lake District for non-golf days.
