About Sherwood Forest
Set deep within the ancient Royal Forest of Sherwood, this James Braid masterpiece delivers a heathland round unlike anything else in the English Midlands.
Founded in 1895 and redesigned by James Braid, Sherwood Forest Golf Club occupies one of the most distinctive settings in English golf: a stretch of heathland threaded through mature oak and silver birch within the historic Royal Forest of Sherwood near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The sandy soil drains rapidly, producing firm, fast conditions that reward precise shotmaking year-round. The club has hosted the Brabazon Trophy and other national amateur events, reflecting a course of genuine championship pedigree. Visitors are welcome with advance booking on certain days, and the sense of arrival, driving through the forest to reach the clubhouse, sets the tone for what follows.

Sherwood Forest
Sherwood Forest Golf Club carries a dual identity that no other course in England can claim: it is both a serious test of heathland golf and a walk through one of the most storied landscapes in the country. James Braid's design, routed through stands of ancient oak and silver birch, uses the natural contours of the forest floor to create a series of holes that feel entirely of their setting. The trees are not merely decorative; they are integral to the strategy of the course, narrowing corridors off the tee and demanding precise approach angles into greens that are often well-protected by both bunkering and natural vegetation.
The course's conditioning is a consistent strength. The free-draining sandy soil that underlies much of the heathland means that even after heavy rain, Sherwood Forest tends to play firm and true within a short period. This gives the layout a character that holds across the seasons, and it helps explain why the club has been chosen to host the Brabazon Trophy and other national amateur events on multiple occasions. A course that plays the same way in October as it does in May is a rare thing, and it is part of what keeps the membership and visiting golfers returning.
What makes a round here genuinely memorable is the atmosphere of the place. The sense of playing within a living forest, one that predates the club by centuries, gives each hole a quality of seclusion and gravitas that is difficult to replicate on more exposed layouts. The Midlands is not traditionally associated with the very top tier of English golf, but Sherwood Forest makes a compelling case that the region deserves closer attention from golfers whose itineraries rarely stray beyond the Surrey and Berkshire heathland corridor.

J Peters3 years agoI played here as part of a society, we were made to feel very welcome by the staff and it's members. The course is a great track, with the greens being a welcome challenge. It was so quiet during the round too, there aren't any busy roads anywhere near the course. The locker rooms were spacious and the club provides towels for a shower. The food we had afterwards was superb. There is a lot of quality courses in the area, and this is one of them. If you want a buggy, you need to book in advance. The pro in the shop said they only had 3.
Paul Murphya year agoBy far the worst we’ve ever been treated by members at any club. We played as a four ball 4:15 minutes and we let 3 groups play through they absolutely marched us down felt like speed golf one pair we let through took 3 shots to pass our tee shots they said they were playing in a competition, well if they slowed down a little may actually eventually learn to play. Having paid all that money and then had round ruined we left disgusted
