About Saunton (East Course)
Saunton's East Course is the finest links in the south-west of England, laid out across one of the most dramatic dune systems in the country.
Set within Braunton Burrows, a vast and ancient sand dune complex on the North Devon coast, the East Course at Saunton Golf Club delivers a true links experience that few courses in the south of England can match. Redesigned by Herbert Fowler in 1919, the layout stretches to 6,703 yards of natural, demanding golf where the wind, the turf, and the terrain do the talking. It has hosted the English Amateur Championship and a string of national events, earning its place among England's most respected championship venues. Visitor access is available, with advance booking made directly with the club.

Saunton (East Course)
Devon is not a county most golfers think of first when planning a links trip, and that is precisely what makes Saunton such a rewarding discovery. The East Course occupies a sweeping stretch of Braunton Burrows, a dune system so expansive and wild that it feels far removed from the manicured parkland that dominates golf in the south of England. Herbert Fowler's 1919 redesign made the most of this extraordinary natural canvas, routing the course through ridges and valleys of marram-covered sand that create a succession of memorable holes demanding both precision and course management.
The conditioning at Saunton tends to be firm and fast, particularly in summer, which rewards the low, running game that links golf demands. Several holes play along elevated ridges offering views across the Taw and Torridge estuary and out to the Atlantic, adding a grandeur to proceedings that belies the course's relative anonymity outside serious golfing circles. The wind, which rarely drops entirely in this corner of Devon, is the ultimate arbiter of a score here: a comfortable front nine can be transformed into something considerably more demanding when the breeze shifts direction.
Saunton's place in English golf is secure even if its reputation lags behind northern counterparts like Royal Birkdale or Sandwich. For golfers based in the south-west, or those willing to travel, it offers something genuinely rare: a links of national championship standard set in a landscape of outstanding natural interest. The West Course, operated by the same club, provides a complementary and slightly less severe option on the same ground, making Saunton a destination well worth a two-day visit.

What Golfers Say About Saunton (East Course)
A selection of recent visitor reviews from Google.
prio7342a week agoTop class links challenge, especially with a 40mph wind... Hard to say which course is best, East or West. East obviously gets the bigger competitions and is a better challenge for younger, longer hitters. But West had some tighter and more scenic holes that just edged it for me. Both courses stand up well against the very best links in the UK. The big new clubhouse is a bit of a motorway service station caff but staff are friendly and views are fantastic from it. Food is also decent and good value.
Adrian Rudge6 months agoThis has to be one of the best places in the UK to play golf. Played both courses over two days in a competition organised by NCG. You need to bring your 'A' game if you want to score well. No two holes the same and every one a challenge. Someone asked me which was my favourite course, which is like asking which is your favourite child. Food before and after was excellent.
Brian Blessman6 months ago£175 a round to play courses in awful condition , I am very surprised to see such positive reviews. Yes it’s been dry, but these two courses look to have been well over played, to the extent anyone would think the U.S army had been training on them again . The photo below is comparable to all fairways , on either course. Such a shame -
