About Rye

Rye is one of the most private and most coveted rounds in English golf, a traditional links of genuine quality set among the Romney Marshes of East Sussex.

Founded in 1894 near the historic town of Rye in East Sussex, Rye Golf Club has cultivated one of the strongest amateur traditions in English golf. The Old Course, the main 18-hole layout, occupies classic links terrain with tight, firm turf and rolling fairways exposed to the winds that blow in across the English Channel from the south and west. The club also operates the shorter Jubilee Course on the same ground. Rye is strictly private with very limited visitor access, placing it among the most exclusive clubs in England; access requires either a member invitation or a connection through a recognised club.

Rye Golf Club sits at the confluence of English golf's two great traditions: the natural links on the one hand, and the private club culture on the other. The Romney Marshes provide a setting that is unlike any other in English golf, a low-lying, windswept landscape with a history of smuggling, sheep farming, and ecclesiastical politics that gives the area a singular atmosphere. The golf course emerged from this terrain in 1894 and has remained largely faithful to its original character, resisting the urge to modernise in ways that would compromise its essential identity.

The Old Course at Rye plays firm and fast in the manner of the best traditional links, with turf that sits close to the ground and fairways that offer the kind of unpredictable bounces that make links golf intellectually demanding. The Channel winds, which blow with particular directness across the flat marshland, are the primary variable in any round here: holes that play comfortably with the wind become a different proposition entirely when it turns against you. This is a course that demands local knowledge and adaptability, qualities that are developed over many years of play.

Rye's amateur tradition is central to its identity in a way that is rare even among England's most private clubs. The President's Putter, contested annually between Oxford and Cambridge alumni, has been held at Rye for generations and reflects a connection between the club and the game's amateur values that has never been diluted by commercial considerations. For those fortunate enough to play here, Rye offers a glimpse of a particular strain of English golf culture that exists in very few places, and in that context, the medieval town on the hillside above the course is an entirely appropriate backdrop.

A special club. Wonderful challenging links course in superb condition and a great lunch.

A real test of links golf. The days we were there the rough was long and tough which coupled with the tight fairways made it quite tricky - even more so on the second day as it was blowing 15-20 mph. Greens were very fair and true though tough with subtle breaks. The par 3s were very difficult and fantastic. Excellent value with great beer and fantastic sit down lunch (tie and jacket required), as well as a very modern locker room with invigorating showers, but make sure you bring plenty of balls.

Just got hit by a golf ball while driving past the course while driving with children in the car. When I called the club to tell them, the person on the other side of the phone said: “And?” Rude and entitled behaviour not caring at all about putting other people at serious risk. I guess money really doesn’t buy you class!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can visitors play at Rye Golf Club?
Rye Golf Club has very limited visitor access and is effectively a private club. Visiting golfers typically require a personal invitation from a member or access through an established reciprocal arrangement. The club is considerably more restricted than most English links courses.
What is the President's Putter at Rye Golf Club?
The President's Putter is a prestigious amateur event held annually at Rye, contested between former Oxford and Cambridge University golf captains. It is one of the longest-running amateur competitions in England and has taken place at Rye for many decades.
How long is the Old Course at Rye?
The Old Course measures around 6,300 yards from the back tees, though the effective difficulty is substantially amplified by the Channel winds that sweep across the exposed Romney Marsh terrain.
What is the Jubilee Course at Rye?
The Jubilee Course is a shorter layout on the same site as the Old Course at Rye. It provides an alternative for those who cannot commit to a full 18-hole round on the Old Course.
Is the town of Rye worth visiting alongside the golf?
Rye is one of the most attractive small towns in England. The cobbled streets, medieval Ypres Tower, half-timbered buildings, and independent shops and restaurants make it a genuinely rewarding destination in its own right, adding considerable appeal to a golf trip to the area.
