About Royal West Norfolk
Royal West Norfolk is one of the most isolated and atmospheric golf experiences in England, cut off from the road by the tide twice a day.
Founded in 1892 on the North Norfolk coast at Brancaster, Royal West Norfolk is a club unlike any other in England. Access to the clubhouse is via a tidal causeway that floods at high tide, leaving the course entirely surrounded by salt marsh and tidal channels for several hours each day. The layout itself has changed remarkably little since it was first established, preserving a form of golf that is raw, natural, and completely unmediated by modern course architecture. Royal West Norfolk is a private club; visitors require a member introduction or a reciprocal arrangement with another recognised club.

Royal West Norfolk
The North Norfolk coast is home to some of England's most distinctive and least-visited landscapes, and Royal West Norfolk sits at its heart. Known universally as Brancaster, after the village on its doorstep, the club was founded in 1892 and has spent the intervening century and more quietly accumulating a reputation among those who know links golf as one of the most singular experiences in the game. It does not shout about itself; it does not need to.
The golf course is a product of its environment in the most complete sense. Salt marshes flank several holes, tidal channels come into play as genuine hazards, and the light in this part of Norfolk has a quality unique to the east coast of England: luminous, flat, and constantly shifting. The natural bounces and run of the ball on turf that has never been over-engineered reward instinctive shot-making and punish those who treat it like a parkland course. When the wind blows in off the Wash, which it frequently does, Brancaster becomes a stern examination of links technique.
Access adds another dimension to the experience. The tidal causeway that separates the club from the road is not merely a logistical consideration; it is a defining part of the sense of place. When the tide is in and the marshes are flooded on both sides of the track, Brancaster feels like a world apart. For golfers who seek out courses with genuine character and a connection to the natural landscape, Royal West Norfolk belongs near the top of any England itinerary. A round at Hunstanton, the other major links on this stretch of coast, pairs naturally with a visit to Brancaster.

Peter Curtis3 months agoSabrina in the Pro shop could not have been more welcoming or helpful nor could the bar staff. The facilities are relatively new and excellent. We chose to go in the Autumn so did have the advantage of a lower green fee but with having to use mats off the fairway and the greens were very average compared to many others we have played at this time of year, we felt they could have discounted the green fee further. The club house Captains board is worth the entrance money on its own. It includes a Prince, a Vicount, Dukes and an Earl, 4 and 5 star military officers galore and even a VC. What a history! Nice course, very windy but thats what makes it a challenge. Go when the weather is warmer.
Ken Randlesome4 years agoNow this place is amazing. Everything about it is special. You must arrive before the tide rises and blocks your entry. The course is in great condition. I love the fact you cross the beach to get to the first tee. Stunning views and amazing bunkers. Lunch was served upstairs which gave us an amazing view of the beach. The food was excellent. Staff more than welcoming. Can't wait to return
Stephen Caldwell2 years agoAn amazingly interesting links, definitely think your way around this. For me, it was great for my playing group they found it hard. The balance between fine links surfaces and thinking golf was fascinating. But, it doesn’t forget diversity and the environment. Very rustic fairways and bunkers. This is a must visit course..⛳️⛳️😄👏🤩
