About Royal Portrush

Royal Portrush's Dunluce Links is the only course outside Great Britain to have hosted The Open Championship, and its return in 2019 produced one of the most celebrated victories in the tournament's history.

Designed by Harry Colt and opened in its current form in 1947, the Dunluce Links sits on the north Antrim coast with views to Dunluce Castle and the Giant's Causeway. The 2019 Open brought the championship back to Portrush after a 68-year absence, and Shane Lowry's victory in front of enormous, emotionally charged home crowds announced to the world what those who had played the course already knew: the Dunluce Links belongs in any conversation about the greatest seaside layouts on earth. Visitor access is available, though demand is high and advance booking is essential.

Northern Ireland has built an extraordinary reputation for links golf in recent decades, and Royal Portrush has been the flagship for that reputation. Alongside Royal County Down, it forms a pairing of world-class links that would be remarkable even if they sat in a well-connected golfing hub; the fact that they are both located in one of the smaller regions of the British Isles makes their concentration all the more striking. The return of The Open to Portrush in 2019 was not simply a sporting event; it was a statement about the quality of golf infrastructure in Northern Ireland and a long overdue acknowledgement that the Dunluce Links deserved to be back on the sport's biggest stage.

Harry Colt's design exploits the clifftop terrain to spectacular effect. The course runs through natural duneland and along the edge of cliffs above the Atlantic, with the ruins of Dunluce Castle visible from several holes and the Giant's Causeway just a few miles to the east. The routing creates a variety of shot shapes and distances, and the wind, which rarely disappears entirely on this exposed headland, shifts direction as the holes turn and change elevation. The challenge is entirely golf-specific: no trick holes, no manufactured difficulty, just the demands of the terrain honestly presented and consistently tested across 18 holes.

The Valley Course, the club's second 18-hole layout, runs through lower ground away from the clifftops and offers a more sheltered but still testing experience. For visitors who want to play multiple rounds during a Causeway Coast trip, combining the Dunluce Links with the Valley Course and perhaps a round at Portstewart or Castlerock gives a comprehensive sense of what this part of Northern Ireland has to offer. Royal Portrush's position at the top of Northern Irish golf is secure, and the 2019 Open cemented its place as one of the most important venues in the global game.

Had a great time at The Open here. Impressive how they just lift and shift all the branding from one place to another so the look and feel is consistent. Everything fine except the Saturday night shuttle bus experience which was a disaster. We waited over an hour for a bus but there were literally thousands still queuing at that point (8pm).

As a first time attending the Open, it was an Amazing experience and to top it all the weather was fabulous. A few tips, be prepared for crowds, long walks to get to different services within the visitor area and queues for everything!!For example, at the merchandise shop, I queued for 1hour to get inside…then items had run out but I did manage to get an umbrella which I wanted ( as the smaller shops around the Venus/ course had run out… ) then another long queue at the check out!! All in all that took me 1.5hrs! There is no avoiding long waits to access all the stands to view the golf. The reserved seats were left empty. Lastly, on arrival at the entry gate.. we waited 1.5hrs to get in!!! Again I think the organisers need to improve this for future events. It’s not for the faint hearted and so planning how you spend your time and navigating around the course to watch the players is crucial… but remember to embrace every moment and enjoy the experience

Unbelievable course. Walk right up from the beach and enjoy the view of Dun Luce castle on the right. Welcoming staff and beautiful clubhouse and greens. Clubhouse handles bookings for both Dunluce and Valley links.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can visitors play the Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush?
Yes, visitor tee times are available on the Dunluce Links, though the course is in very high demand and advance booking is strongly recommended. Tee times can be booked through the Royal Portrush website at royalportrushgolfclub.com. The club also operates the Valley Course, which is more readily available and offers a fine secondary links experience.
What is the history of The Open at Royal Portrush?
Royal Portrush first hosted The Open Championship in 1951, when Max Faulkner won the title. It was the only occasion the championship had been held outside Great Britain until 2019, when it returned after a 68-year gap. Shane Lowry won the 2019 Open in dominant fashion, leading by six shots entering the final round and holding on in difficult conditions to win by six shots. The scenes on the 18th green, with Lowry accompanied by tens of thousands of Irish spectators, were among the most emotional in Open history.
What are the most notable holes on the Dunluce Links?
The 5th hole, White Rocks, is a long par 4 played along the clifftop with the Atlantic and the White Rocks limestone formations visible below. The 16th, Calamity Corner, is a par 3 of around 200 yards played across a deep chasm, requiring an accurate carry over difficult ground. The routing across the clifftops and through the duneland gives the course an unusually dramatic physical character.
How far is Royal Portrush from Belfast?
Royal Portrush is approximately 55 miles north of Belfast, reached via the M2 motorway and the A26. The drive takes around an hour. Belfast International Airport and George Best Belfast City Airport both have regular services from across the UK, making Portrush very accessible for a golf trip. The Causeway Coast area also offers the Giant's Causeway, Bushmills Distillery and several other attractions alongside the golf.
Is Royal Portrush open all year round?
The club is open throughout the year, though tee time availability and visitor access policies may vary between seasons. The peak summer months attract the highest demand. Contact the club directly or check royalportrushgolfclub.com for current visitor information and seasonal policies.
