About Royal Ashdown Forest
One of England's oldest clubs, Royal Ashdown Forest plays across heather and stream without a single bunker, relying entirely on the natural landscape for its defence.
Founded in 1888 and set on the open heathland of Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club is one of the most distinctive courses in England. It is best known for a characteristic unique among top-ranked layouts: there are no bunkers anywhere on the Old Course. The natural hazards of deep heather, bracken, streams and mature woodland provide all the challenge needed, and the result is a round that feels entirely authentic to its landscape. The club offers two 18-hole courses, the Old Course and the West Course, and has hosted the English Seniors Championship among other national events. Visitors are welcome on certain days with advance booking, and the setting near Forest Row in East Sussex is one of the most beautiful in English inland golf.

Royal Ashdown Forest
Royal Ashdown Forest occupies a place entirely its own in the landscape of English golf. The absence of bunkers is the fact that most often introduces the course to those who have not played it, but it is not a gimmick or an oversight; it is the logical consequence of a piece of land so naturally equipped with hazard that sand traps would be redundant. The heather at Ashdown is thick and penalising, the streams that cross several fairways demand careful thought about both line and length, and the trees that border the layout narrow the margins for error on a number of holes to a degree that no bunker could improve upon. The course defends itself on its own terms.
The Old Course stretches across elevated heathland with wide views over the Sussex Weald, and the quality of the light on a clear day, the warmth of the heather in late summer and the muted greys of the birch woodland in winter, gives each season a distinct character. The routing has a naturalness that comes from the course being laid out in 1888, when the expectation was simply that the land would be walked and the holes would follow it rather than impose upon it. That philosophy produces golf of a particular kind: unhurried, considered, shaped by the place rather than by the designer's ego.
Ashdown Forest carries its literary associations lightly. That A.A. Milne drew his inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood from this landscape is a pleasant footnote rather than a marketing priority, and the course itself is far too serious as a test of golf to need the support of external associations. For golfers who want a round that is genuinely unlike anything else in England, Royal Ashdown Forest is one of the more compelling arguments for exploring the counties south of London with the same attention usually reserved for the Surrey and Berkshire heathland belt.

Chris Ripley8 months ago⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Royal Ashdown Golf Club – Sun, Solitude & Soft Grass I didn’t come here for the golf — I came for the sunshine and the feeling of soft grass under my feet. Royal Ashdown is an incredible spot for a quiet sunbathe or a slow, barefoot wander. The fairways are beautifully kept, the setting is peaceful, and the views over the forest are just stunning. It’s rare to find somewhere that feels this open and calming. Perfect for clearing your head, grounding yourself, or just lying back and soaking up some rays. Nature, stillness, and a touch of barefoot luxury.
Catherine Hylands5 months agoJust played Royal Ashdown, Old Course, with my golf society. What a fantastic golf course. So many memorable, individual golf holes, all challenging. Greens were fantastic and ran true but quick. great help from a young man in the Pro shop. Would love return soon.
Robin3 years agoBrilliant golf club. Two fantastic courses in the Old Course and West Course that run around, through and over the Ashdown Forest. Greens and course conditions have been great for many years. Shop, clubhouse and food are very good with continuous improvements. Members and management are friendly also. Old Course feels like a top 50 UK course, whilst the West Course is always a good test and one of the best shorter length courses around. Definitely worth a visit.
