About Moortown
Moortown is a historic heathland course in north Leeds designed by Alister MacKenzie, the architect who would go on to create Augusta National.
Founded in 1909 and designed by Alister MacKenzie in one of his earliest major commissions, Moortown Golf Club occupies heathland on the northern fringe of Leeds, where heather, gorse and mature trees define a course of genuine championship quality. The club holds a unique place in Ryder Cup history as the venue for the 1929 match, the first time the competition was staged on British soil, where Great Britain and Ireland defeated the United States. MacKenzie's design principles, developed and refined here, are clearly recognisable alongside his later and more celebrated work at Augusta National.

Moortown
Moortown's place in golf history rests on two foundations: the brilliance of its designer and the significance of what took place here in 1929. Alister MacKenzie, at the time still building his reputation as a golf course architect, produced a routing that made intelligent use of the natural heathland, incorporating heather rough, strategic bunkering and holes of contrasting character across a terrain that lends itself to thoughtful design. The 1929 Ryder Cup, played here when the competition was still finding its identity, was the first to be staged on British soil, and Great Britain and Ireland's victory made Moortown a landmark in the history of the game.
The connection to MacKenzie gives Moortown an architectural significance that extends well beyond Yorkshire. Visitors with an interest in golf design will recognise the hallmarks of his approach in the varied green complexes, the use of ridges and hollows to create natural hazards, and the way the routing moves through the landscape with apparent ease. Those same principles, refined over subsequent years, would produce Augusta National and Cypress Point. Moortown is, in a sense, where that design philosophy was tested and proven at scale.
Today the club remains one of the finest private members' clubs in the north of England, maintaining a course that has evolved carefully without losing the essential character MacKenzie intended. For golfers making the journey to West Yorkshire, Moortown offers something genuinely rare: a heathland course of championship pedigree with a historical story that no other club in the north can match.

What Golfers Say About Moortown

Phil Thacker8 months agoIf you have never played here and are serious about golf I would highly recommend. The course condition is amazing, greens fantastic and good architecture is clever. Alongside that it is well organised, polite and friendly. Put all that alongside the history of the club, e.g. ryder cup host in early 1920s I think and the clubhouse history and you really are in for a great golf experience.
Mr Duckwood8 months agoGreat course, played in 30mph winds which was tough. Greens ran true, fairways were scorched but with so little rain recently, not surprising. Great clubhouse and changing rooms, worth a visit if you’re close by
Adrian De Vito6 months agoAn absolute beauty! Yes the fairways were a little dry, just as much as most golf courses in the country, but the real challenge is to avoid the heather that you will find throughout the course! The tee boxes are manicured to perfections and the greens are as good as you will find them in the country. The bunkers not only have white sand in them but plenty of it too! To make this course a brilliant one, is the great food and drinks served at the end of your round! I will go back!
