About Gullane No.1

Gullane No.1 is the flagship of one of Scotland's great multi-course clubs, a championship links rising above the East Lothian shore with views that stretch from the Forth to the Bass Rock.

Founded in 1882, Gullane Golf Club operates three courses on the same stretch of East Lothian linksland, with No.1 serving as the championship layout and the standard against which the other two are measured. The course climbs away from the village of Gullane onto Gullane Hill, where panoramic views take in Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth and the unmistakable silhouette of Bass Rock, before descending back through natural links terrain of exceptional quality. No.1 has hosted the Scottish Open and the AIG Women's Open, confirming its place among the elite layouts on Scotland's celebrated Golf Coast.

The routing of No.1 is cleverly designed to exploit the natural topography of Gullane Hill, with the climb in the opening holes followed by a sweeping plateau section before the course descends back towards the village. The turf is characteristically East Lothian crisp, firming up quickly in summer to produce the kind of running game that links purists prize, and the greens sit naturally within the landscape rather than being imposed upon it. Wind, as ever on this coastline, is the factor that separates a good round from a great one.

Gullane village itself has long been one of the most agreeable places to base a golf trip in Scotland, with Muirfield just down the road and North Berwick within easy reach. The combination of three courses on one site, excellent practice facilities and a clubhouse that serves both members and visitors well makes Gullane one of the most complete golf destinations on the East Lothian coast. Playing all three courses across a long weekend remains a popular choice for those who want to experience the full range the club offers.

Gullane No. 1 Review Having played Gullane 2 not to long ago and a few other courses in the area I was absolutely buzzing at the prospect of getting on course 1 and it has not let me down. I arrived and parked up at the members clubhouse and went for a walk inside to take it all in and as you’ll see from some of the pictures it is golfing history come to life. I took a stroll down to the pro shop, which is one of the best I’ve been in, plenty of variety and a few quirky products rarely seen in other pro shops without the eye watering prices. Onto the course, Gullane No. 1 is a classic Scottish links that delivers everything golfers hope for from East Lothian: firm turf, strategic bunkering, and ever-present coastal winds that demand thoughtful shot-making. I thought the 1st hole was a really good design for an opening hole, challenging but not brutal and a nice intro to your round. The 2nd hole really was a test of distance control and knowing your lines and picking your shot with confidence and committing to it. Once you finish the 2nd and wander up over the hill to the 3rd tee you really get a sense of what your in for and just how beautiful the course is. The stretch from the seventh tee offers one of the finest panoramic views in Scottish golf, with the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh, and beyond laid out beneath you. The 7th tee box may be my favourite yet and that’s saying something but the views looking out and seeing the likes of Muirfield, Renaissance etc is just special. One of the locals recons you can see 17 different golf courses from that vantage point although I admit I didn’t count but I could absolutely believe it. There are some nerve-wracking holes, some holes that really get you in the mood to go for it and attack pins and absolutely not a single boring hole on the course. Being at Gullane it has the ever famous tee shot back down the hill on the 17th which is a feature on all 3 courses in their own way but it’s just so special you can’t help but be a little giddy after bombing one from on high. Gullane No. 1 stands comfortably among Scotland’s great links and is an essential stop for any serious golfer and the 1st course in a long time to break into my top 10 in my rankings. I can’t wait to go back and give Gullane another go in better weather in summer time as it’s epic in the Winter I can only imagine how good it’ll be on a nice day.

Played no 1, and it was very good. Absolutely loved the flow and layout of the course, brilliant visuals all over the course. The turf and sward quality was outstanding too. Really easy to play golf on surfaces like that. The team we saw were all first class too, as was the food and drinks we had after the match.

We had an amazing experience from start to finish but be prepared for all weather conditions. From arrival at the clubhouse with good food and drink options to heading over to the starters hut via the range, chipping area and putting green we were raring to go. We played #2 course which was in fantastic condition with true running greens, the views get steadily better as you climb Gullane hill. We topped the round off with a drink in the bar after a full change to dry out from the monsoon, definitely worth a visit
