About Ganton
Ganton is England's finest inland links equivalent, a brilliantly bunkered championship course in the Vale of Pickering that has hosted the Ryder Cup, Walker Cup and Curtis Cup.
Founded in 1891 and set on sandy heathland in the Vale of Pickering, Ganton Golf Club is one of the great inland courses in England and one of the most important championship venues in the country. Designed by Tom Chisholm and later refined by Harry Vardon, James Braid and Harry Colt, the course possesses over 100 bunkers positioned with exceptional strategic intelligence. It hosted the Ryder Cup in 1949 and the Walker Cup in 2003, as well as the Curtis Cup and numerous major amateur events. As a private club, visitors are welcome with advance booking, though a member introduction is preferred.

Ganton
England's best golf courses are disproportionately concentrated on its coastlines, but Ganton stands as compelling evidence that inland golf can reach the same heights. Founded in 1891 on sandy heathland in the Vale of Pickering, the course sits between the Yorkshire Wolds and the North York Moors, 10 miles from Scarborough and well off the usual tourist routes. The ground is firm and fast, draining rapidly after rain and playing with a links-like quality that sets it apart from the heavy parkland courses that dominate much of inland England. It is this combination of sandy soil, strategic design and exceptional conditioning that has earned Ganton its reputation as England's finest inland links equivalent.
The bunkering is the defining feature of the course and the element that gives Ganton its championship credentials. Harry Vardon, who won six Open Championships and is the greatest golfer to have played out of Yorkshire, refined the course in the early 20th century. James Braid and Harry Colt followed, each adding their contribution to a layout that now contains over 100 bunkers placed with forensic strategic intelligence. The hazards are not decorative: they are positioned to reward the correct angle from the tee and to punish the line that looks safe but leaves an awkward approach. Golfers who arrive without local knowledge and assume that length alone will suffice tend to suffer.
The roll call of events at Ganton is extraordinary for a club of its size and location. The 1949 Ryder Cup, the 2003 Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup: championships that would be held at any links in the rotation have repeatedly found their way to this corner of North Yorkshire, a testament to the quality of the course and the respect in which it is held by the game's governing bodies. For golfers who have not yet made the journey, Ganton is one of the most rewarding discoveries in English golf.

Curtis Drummond2 months agoMy absolute favourite golf course in England. It's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Lovely inside and a very helpful pro shop too. I prefer playing it in the colder months so the greens are a little more receptive!
Lawrence Mafaro5 months agoBeautiful challenging course. This course is just great and the bunkers makes it more interesting. Food is great, but don't forget to take away with you the Ganton Gold beer.
prio73428 months agoUnquestionably a superb course. First few holes I wasn’t sure why it’s rated so highly, as it reminded me of plenty of other decent heathland tracks. But the place grows on you and the holes get better and better - the bunkering is obviously amazing and overall it’s a tough, fair test of golf. We had a great day at Ganton, but the experience was slightly tainted by the offhand way the staff on duty treated us and other visitors. We played a twilight round and when we finished the whole place was locked up and no one was around. It was only around 8pm on a June evening and no one had thought to mention it to us - or to the group in front. We had left shoes etc in the clubhouse - lucky we were staying locally so could collect them the next day. When you are paying as much as it costs to visit a place like Ganton, you expect better.
