About Delamere Forest
Delamere Forest is the finest inland course in the north-west of England, a Herbert Fowler design carved through ancient Cheshire forest where sandy heathland, silver birch and pine create a setting quite unlike any other course in the region.
Founded in 1910 and designed by Herbert Fowler, Delamere Forest Golf Club sits on the edge of the ancient forest of the same name in the heart of Cheshire, creating one of the most atmospheric and distinctive rounds available in northern England. Fowler's routing works in harmony with the forest terrain, using the natural topography of the sandy Cheshire plain to produce a course of genuine variety where heather, pine, silver birch and gorse provide both visual beauty and tactical challenge. The club has hosted the English Amateur championship and various other prestigious events, confirming a design quality that has stood the test of more than a century of competitive and recreational play.

Delamere Forest
Playing Delamere Forest for the first time is a genuinely surprising experience. The north-west of England is associated in most golfers' minds with the great coastal links of Lancashire, and the idea that Cheshire contains a heathland course of comparable quality and character is not widely appreciated outside the region. Fowler's design confounds expectations from the opening hole, as the sandy forest terrain reveals itself to be ideally suited to the kind of strategic, ground-game golf that heathland design at its best produces.
The course's position between Chester and Manchester gives it a catchment area that should, by rights, make it one of the better-known courses in the north of England. That it remains relatively obscure beyond the region says something about the tendency of great golf to concentrate its reputation in a few celebrated counties. Delamere is fully the equal of many courses with far greater national profiles, and the forest setting, with its combination of birch, pine and heather, produces a visual and atmospheric experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the north-west.
Fowler's design philosophy, evident also in his work at Walton Heath and Saunton, is on full display here: a routing that uses the natural landscape rather than fighting it, bunkering that is strategically placed to reward careful thought from the tee, and greens that demand accuracy of approach without being excessively tricked up. The sandy soil means the course drains quickly and plays well in all seasons, an advantage that many north-west courses on heavier ground cannot claim. For golfers based in the region or passing through, Delamere Forest is an essential visit. Details and visitor arrangements can be found at delameregolf.co.uk.

Dom Stevo2 months agoFirst time playing here as we wanted to finish the year off with a great course and we couldn’t have done much better absolutely stunning course in fantastic conditions given the amount of rain and that we are in middle of December, greens brilliant and even the 15th shortened to a par 3 during winter was still a fantastic par 3 and didn’t look out of place, complimentary range balls to use before the round also a nice touch and the lads in the pro shop extremely friendly and made to feel very relaxed, cant wait to come back next year in one of the opens 👌🏼
Simon Hill10 months agoPlayed yesterday and wow , why have I not played there before . Pro-shop welcomed us and gave advice on some holes , the members were very welcoming and the course was in good condition . The weather on the day was only about 45 mph and great to play in . Almost forgot the tea was beautifully strong which was needed before heading out . Definitely going back this year credit to all at Delamere .
Charlie Robertsa year agoPlayed here today 22/10/24 Fantastic course quality for the time of year, brilliant course layout which was challenging yet enjoyable and somewhere i’m 100% going to come back to. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and any members also gave you a warm welcome. On arrival we were given a in depth explanation of the course (including advice on holes that are not straight forward) and told that there were complimentary range balls. The food we had post round was very good in an unbelievable setting overlooking the course. All in all a great day out that i’m keen to do again in the not so distant future.
