About Cruden Bay
Cruden Bay is one of Scotland's great hidden gems: a spectacular clifftop links on the Aberdeenshire coast with a character unlike any other course in the country.
Founded in 1899 and designed by Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler, Cruden Bay was built by the Great North of Scotland Railway Company as a resort destination. The hotel is long gone, but the course endures in remarkable form, routing across dramatic duneland above the Bay of Cruden with views out to the North Sea. Blind shots, eccentric holes and tight natural terrain give it a personality that sets it apart even in a country full of distinguished links. Unlike many top-ranked clubs, Cruden Bay is genuinely visitor-friendly and accessible, making it one of the most rewarding rounds available in the north-east of Scotland.

Cruden Bay
Scotland has no shortage of great links courses, but Cruden Bay occupies a unique position. Built as a railway resort course at the turn of the 20th century, it was designed by Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler with a freedom that more commercial projects rarely allow. The result is a layout of genuine eccentricity and brilliance: holes that drop into hidden valleys, blind tee shots over dune ridges, and a routing that seems to follow the ground on its own terms rather than conforming to any conventional template. The Great North of Scotland Railway Company's hotel may be long demolished, but the course it left behind has outlasted everything. It has been refined over the decades but retains the essential character that Simpson and Fowler created.
The setting is among the most dramatic on the Aberdeenshire coast. The back nine climbs and descends clifftop ground above the Bay of Cruden, with the North Sea visible from almost every hole on the second half of the course. On a clear day the views are spectacular; in a north-easterly gale they are simply ferocious. The course demands adaptability: the ability to flight the ball, play from awkward lies and trust a blind approach are all required at various points. It rewards repeat visits and rewards golfers who engage with the ground rather than fighting it.
Cruden Bay is located about 25 miles north of Aberdeen and combines naturally with a round at Royal Aberdeen for golfers making the trip north. Unlike many top-ranked courses in Scotland, Cruden Bay is refreshingly open to visitors and the green fees reflect the fact that the club values accessibility. For golfers willing to make the journey to this stretch of the Aberdeenshire coast, it is one of the most memorable days on offer anywhere in the country.

Dale Nilsson6 months agoGreat Scottish links course, the staff is very friendly and the caddy we had was very good and knowledgeable of the course. The last few holes are a little bit tricky, but overall the course is in great shape and there are some great views from the course. This course is a great one for your bucket list! ⛳️😎
Håkan Cronqvist4 months agoGreat course - unfortunately the greens had just been tined so not in great shape - however was proactivly offered a rebate, which was appreciated.
MAX KIM6 months agoCruden Bay is a course that captures the soul of Scottish links golf. Set against a backdrop of dunes, cliffs, and the North Sea, it's visually stunning and architecturally fascinating. The routing is quirky in the best way—blind shots, dramatic elevation changes, and holes that feel like no others in the world. The front nine weaves through dunes with character and charm, while the back nine opens up to sweeping coastal views and bold design. Highlights include the short par-4 14th and the rollercoaster par-3 15th. It's not a long course by modern standards, but it challenges every club in your bag and every bit of imagination you have. Cruden Bay is golf as it once was—raw, natural, emotional. It's the kind of course that makes you smile, even when you’re struggling with your game. A truly unforgettable walk and one of the most character-rich rounds you can play in Scotland.
