About Blackmoor
Hidden within the Blackmoor Estate in east Hampshire, Harry Colt's 1913 design is one of the least heralded masterpieces in English heathland golf.
Founded in 1913 and designed by Harry Colt, Blackmoor Golf Club occupies a stretch of mature heathland within the Blackmoor Estate near Whitehill in east Hampshire. Colt's routing through pine, birch and heather is regarded by those who know it well as one of his most intelligent and underappreciated works; the course uses the natural contours of the land with exceptional economy and reveals its subtleties gradually, over many rounds. The sandy soil drains freely and produces excellent playing conditions throughout the year. A private club, Blackmoor welcomes visitors with advance booking on certain weekdays, and the relative obscurity of the venue compared to its quality makes it a rewarding discovery for any serious golfer.

Blackmoor
Harry Colt produced a body of work across British golf that is remarkable for its consistency of quality, and yet within that body of work there are courses that have never received the attention they deserve. Blackmoor is among the most notable of these. The routing is a quiet demonstration of Colt's central principle: that a great golf course should use the land it occupies rather than work against it. The holes at Blackmoor flow through the pine and birch woodland with a naturalness that belies the considerable craft involved in their design, and the strategic interest is maintained throughout without resorting to artificial difficulty.
The course's relative obscurity is partly a function of its location. East Hampshire does not attract the same volume of golf tourism as the Surrey heathland belt to the north or the links coast to the south, and Blackmoor has consequently remained beneath the radar of golfers who compile their lists of English courses to play. For those who do seek it out, the experience tends to be revelatory. The combination of a Colt design in near-original condition, excellent year-round conditioning and a setting of genuine natural beauty is something that few courses anywhere in England can match.
Repeated visits are the key to unlocking everything that Blackmoor has to offer. Colt's strategic thinking is layered in a way that is not fully apparent from a single round; the positions from which certain holes are best attacked, the way the land falls away from particular greens, the subtleties of approach angles that the bunkering enforces rather than simply suggests. It is a course that grows in stature with familiarity, which is one of the defining characteristics of the very best golf architecture.

Kenny Larkin211 months agoSuch a great heathland golf course. It is surrounded by some more famous courses but its still a really good game of golf. The presentation of the course is always super impressive. Greens esp. the new bunkers really set it off now. Food is cheap and good. A lot of clubs could learn a thing or to from Blackmoor.
A E6 months agoA course that is not talked about enough. Up there with the 3 Ws comfortably. Friendly members and pro shop staff. Well worth it.
john blackley5 months agoBlackmoor GC is a great Club and Course. This Heathland Course is a joy to play. Never a dull moment as you navigate your way around the course. Some tricky doglegs, and greens you need to read carefully.
