About Ashburnham

Ashburnham is one of west Wales's most characterful golf courses, a links and heathland hybrid of genuine antiquity set on open common land above Carmarthen Bay.

Founded in 1894, Ashburnham Golf Club is among the oldest clubs in Wales, and its course reflects a history of golf played on natural, largely unaltered ground. Situated near Burry Port in Carmarthenshire, the layout runs across open common land with wide views across Llanelli Bay and the Gower Peninsula to the south. The combination of links and heathland holes gives the course a distinctly varied character, with the natural undulations and wind exposure of a coastal site matched by the firmer, drier turf of the heath. It has hosted the Welsh Amateur Championship on multiple occasions, confirming its credentials as a serious test of the game.

West Wales is not the first region that comes to mind when golfers plan a serious links trip, but Ashburnham makes a compelling case for the area. The Carmarthenshire coast is less celebrated than the Bridgend and Gower stretches further east, but the golf at Ashburnham is of a quality that merits the detour. The course has been played on essentially the same ground for well over a century, and that continuity gives it a settled, unhurried character that newer developments rarely achieve.

The layout's mix of links and heathland holes is not a compromise but a genuine strength. Where many courses are defined by a single character, Ashburnham shifts register as the round progresses: open, wind-exposed holes across the coastal common give way to firmer, more sheltered sections where the turf takes on a heathland quality. Local knowledge matters here in a way that it rarely does on more formulaic layouts, and the course rewards repeat visits in a way that more immediately legible designs do not.

The views from the course across Llanelli Bay and toward the Gower Peninsula provide a constant reminder of the quality of the setting. The Gower, the first place in the United Kingdom to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, sits on the horizon throughout the round. For golfers interested in Wales as a serious golf destination, Ashburnham is one of the courses that best illustrates the depth and variety that the country has to offer beyond its most famous names.

Great golf course, very windy but nice in the summer. A lovely clubhouse with friendly, helpful staff. I will be playing there again.

Lovely traditional and good quality links course. Not so difficult to navigate around there as first time visitors. Bring a few more balls in your bag as the rough can be tough there, especially on the second nine. Club staff are friendly and welcoming,

Frequently Asked Questions

Can visitors play Ashburnham?
Yes, Ashburnham welcomes visiting golfers and advance booking is recommended. The club is approachable and friendly toward visitors, making it easier to arrange a round here than at many private clubs of comparable standing.
Where is Ashburnham Golf Club located?
The club is located near Burry Port in Carmarthenshire, in west Wales. It sits within easy reach of Llanelli and Swansea, and the surrounding area offers access to the Gower Peninsula, one of the most scenic coastlines in Wales.
What makes Ashburnham distinctive among Welsh courses?
The combination of genuine links holes with heathland characteristics is unusual and gives Ashburnham a variety that many courses lack. The common land setting means the course has developed naturally over its long history rather than being heavily redesigned, preserving an old-fashioned character.
What championships has Ashburnham hosted?
Ashburnham has hosted the Welsh Amateur Championship on several occasions, as well as other national and regional events. Its history as a championship venue stretches back many decades.
How does Ashburnham compare to other south Wales golf courses?
Ashburnham tends to be overlooked in favour of better-known courses such as [Royal Porthcawl](/courses/royal-porthcawl) and [Pyle & Kenfig](/courses/pyle-and-kenfig), but golfers who have played it regularly rate it highly. Its more remote location in Carmarthenshire means it is less visited, which is part of its appeal.
