About Alwoodley
Alwoodley Golf Club outside Leeds holds a unique place in golf history as the first course designed by Alister MacKenzie, the architect who would go on to create Augusta National and Cypress Point.
Founded in 1907, Alwoodley was the project that launched MacKenzie's design career and established many of the principles he would refine over the following decades. The course occupies a stretch of heathland north of Leeds, its natural contours and subtle green complexes reflecting the thinking of a young architect already ahead of his time. MacKenzie was himself a member here, and the course served as something of a living laboratory for his evolving ideas about strategic design.

Alwoodley
England's heathland courses form one of the country's most distinctive and celebrated golfing traditions, and Alwoodley belongs in the first rank of that group. What sets it apart from other distinguished heathland venues is its place in the story of golf architecture: this is where Alister MacKenzie began. The green complexes, the use of natural terrain and the strategic variety on offer at Alwoodley all point forward to the work that would follow, and for anyone with an interest in how Augusta National came to be, walking Alwoodley is a revealing experience.
The course sits in attractive countryside north of Leeds, accessible enough for a day trip from the city but secluded enough that it retains the quiet, unhurried atmosphere of a traditional private club. Heather lines many of the fairways, and the layout demands accuracy from the tee on a consistent basis; length is rarely the deciding factor on a course where position and trajectory matter more. The greens, faithful to MacKenzie's fondness for subtle borrowing and deceptive approaches, are among the finest in Yorkshire.
For golfers exploring the golf of northern England, Alwoodley sits within reasonable distance of Ganton, Fulford and Moortown, the latter being another MacKenzie design that completes a compelling local itinerary for admirers of his work. The combination of historical significance, genuine course quality and understated private club character makes Alwoodley one of the most rewarding rounds in the north of England.

timlinleya year agoAbsolutely superb. Well worth the green fee and its position in the top 100 courses. Greens, fairways and tee boxes in immaculate condition. A wonderful afternoon.
Mr Noobstar10 months agoI’ll admit, when I first arrived, I was impressed. The clubhouse is stunning, clearly designed to wow visitors. Even the layout of the course looked promising at first glance. But unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to the appearance. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives ended. The course itself was underwhelming, The actual condition of the course was pretty disappointing. Fairways were inconsistent, with some areas looking dried out or neglected. Clearly not maintained to the level you’d expect for a place charging premium prices. It honestly felt like they’d invested more in landscaping the entrance than in keeping the course itself in shape. For the price they’re charging, I expected a much higher standard. On top of that, drinks were absurdly overpriced, which really took away from the experience. Overall, it felt like all style, no substance. It's definitely not worth the hype or the cost. It’s one of those places that photographs well and sounds great on paper, but once you actually spend a day there, the cracks show. Definitely won’t be in a rush to go back.
