About Aberdovey
Aberdovey is the course that inspired Bernard Darwin's most lyrical writing, a natural links on the Dyfi Estuary in Snowdonia that has changed very little in over a century.
Founded in 1892 in the village of Aberdovey on the Dyfi Estuary in Gwynedd, this links course in mid-Wales occupies a setting of extraordinary beauty. The course weaves through natural duneland with the estuary to one side and the mountains of Snowdonia rising behind the village to the other. It was made famous by Bernard Darwin, the legendary Times golf correspondent, who wrote about Aberdovey with a passion and affection that has never been surpassed in golf writing. Visitor-friendly and genuinely welcoming, it remains one of the most accessible and evocative links courses in [Wales](/locations/wales).

Aberdovey
Wales has a small but distinguished collection of links courses, and Aberdovey sits comfortably among its finest. Founded in 1892 on the Dyfi Estuary in Gwynedd, the course occupies a stretch of natural duneland between the water and the lower slopes of the Snowdonia hills. The routing follows the ground with the unhurried logic of a links laid out before architects began imposing their ideas on the landscape. Blind shots appear where the dunes dictate them; the fairways roll and pitch in the manner of the links tradition. The setting is quietly spectacular: the estuary opens to Cardigan Bay to the west, and on clear days the views of the surrounding mountains from the higher ground give the course an almost otherworldly quality.
Aberdovey's greatest champion was Bernard Darwin, the legendary Times golf correspondent who wrote about the course with a personal affection that transformed it into one of the most written-about venues in golf literature. Darwin's family home was in the village, and he returned to Aberdovey repeatedly throughout his long career, using it as a touchstone for everything he valued in the game. His essays about the course, warm and precise and suffused with genuine love of the place, introduced it to generations of golfers who had never visited Wales. His connection to Aberdovey is part of the club's identity in a way that few golfers' relationships with a single course have ever been.
The village of Aberdovey itself is a charming seaside destination, and the course sits within the Snowdonia National Park. For golfers making the journey to mid-Wales, often a considerable distance from the major population centres, the combination of authentic links golf, remarkable scenery and genuine Welsh hospitality makes Aberdovey one of the most rewarding detours in British golf. The Cambrian Coast railway line stops at Aberdovey station, a ten-minute walk from the clubhouse, making it one of the few top-40 courses in the UK accessible without a car.

simon butler3 months agoYou can see why this is a top 100 course! Played 24/11/25. A great welcome in the pro shop and a fantastic round of golf on a course in great condition. Slick greens which were being ironed just ahead of us! Lovely meal in the clubhouse afterwards with very friendly and welcoming staff. All in all, well worth the 6hr round trip.

Tom R7 months agoTop course, as is expected given it's status. Luckily nice weather and little breeze for us but can imagine a tough challenge when the wind does pick up.
